No one in Blanco will forget when the taps went dry. It was just one of a myriad of hardships experienced by Texans during the historic winter storm.
A city official said on Monday that water service is back to normal for around 99 percent of the city’s water customers.
“All of our approximately 1,200 water customers lost water due to a complete outage,” said City of Blanco Administrator Will Daves.
Founded in 2013, the Blanco Quilters on the Square is a nonprofit organization that promotes “the appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of quilting as an art form and a craft to its membership and the general public.”
The organization welcomes anyone who is interested in joining; there are currently 14 members. There is an annual due of $12, but if one joins after January, the dues are prorated at $1 per month.

The arena at Blanco Cowboy Church was destroyed by the recent winter weather. The arena was not insured, and the church is seeking help to repair it. Judge Brett Bray called a special meeting of the Blanco County Commissioners Court to order at 9 a.m. on Feb. 23. Commissioners Tommy Weir, Emil Uecker, Chris Liesmann and Paul Granberg were present.
Citizens either watch the live streaming video of the meeting via the “Blanco County” YouTube channel or attend in person at the Blanco County Courthouse.
On Feb. 17, 2021, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the City of Blanco public water system, TX#0160002, to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals, or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.

Gem of the Hills Event Center is set up for a blood drive that was held Feb. 24. “This blood drive showed, yet again, what caring and generous people live in our community. Not only did residents look after their friends and neighbors during and following the winter storm, but they came out in full measure just days later to help save the lives of people they will never know.” stated Connie Barron, president of the Gem of the Hills board of directors.
The Blanco boys basketball team made a deep run in the playoffs before falling in the regional quarterfinals.
The Panthers beat the Hallettsville Brahma in the area playoff, 54-45, Wednesday, Feb. 24. Their season ended with a 79-61 loss to San Antonio Cole on Saturday, Feb. 27. The Panthers were striving to avenge their loss to Cole in the third round of the playoffs last year.
The Blanco girls basketball team made history, going deeper in the playoffs than any previous girls basketball team in school history.
The Lady Panthers’ historic run ended in the regional semifinals as they fall 50-27 to Bishop, Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Cuero High School gym. Prior to the game, Blanco defeated Palacios, 62-55, in Goliad in the regional quarterfinals on Feb.
Two Lady Panther powerlifters have qualified for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association regional meet this weekend, March 6 at Dublin High School. The top 10 lifters in each division qualify for regional. Kiley Elrod, left, has qualified and is in first place in her division with a lift total of 935 pounds.
Blanco baseball posted a 4-1 record to open the 2021 season. The Panthers routed Johnson City and went 3-1 in the Marion tournament, losing to the host team by a run in the championship game.

Martha Jo Laumer passed away Feb. 24, 2021 at her home in Blanco. Born in North Dakota in 1959 to Bobbie Jo Smith and Evelyn Faye Chapman Smith, Martha was 61 years of age. She is preceded in death by both of her parents.
