Every month, the “Caring Kids” at the First United Methodist Church meet for a community service project. This month, they baked cookies and made thank-you cards for the first responders who help keep them and their families safe. They started with the Kids’ Lunch Club, where they filled up on chili dogs, nachos and ice cream…maybe just a little more ice cream…then set to work on the hand-made cards.
During its July 16 board meeting, Pedernales Electric Cooperative announced the cooperative was ranked No. 10 in the nation for overall customer satisfaction and No. 7 among U.S. electric cooperatives according to the J.D. Power 2018 Electric Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study. “We’re honored our members have responded positively as we continue our efforts of providing low-cost, reliable electricity,” said PEC Chief Executive Officer Julie Parsley.
As a result of new tariffs imposed specifically on newsprint, the cost of newsprint has increased significantly. Our printers are passing along these costs to the paper, and we must ask the readership to share in the costs. As a result, effective Aug. 15, 2018, the price of a single copy of the paper will increase to $1 from $.75. The last time the cost of a single copy of the Johnson City Record Courier was raised was in 2006, when the price went from $.50 to the current rate of $.75.
Blanco Police officers responded to support the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office on a call Monday, July 16, 2018, reporting that a convicted felon allegedly possessed narcotics, weapons and a potential explosive device. After dispatchers received the call, officers arrived at the scene in the Lake of the Hills subdivision south of Blanco.
Blanco County First Responders along with numerous Hill Country agencies worked through Wednesday to contain a vegetation fire that started Tuesday, July 17, 2018 and scorched over 700 acres of ranch land on Smith-West Ranch Road in Round Mountain. Blanco County Emergency Management reported Tuesday at 5:20 p.m. multiple agencies responded to heavy fire conditions that threatened a structure.
JCISD held a Regular Board Meeting on July 9. Board President Shelly Wenmohs called the meeting to order and the board approved the Consent Agenda which included minutes, monthly expenditures, and reports. District Steering Committee on District Needs Assessment JCISD Superintendent Richard Kolek recognized and thanked all members of the District Steering Committee.
Grey Grote, of the Johnson City FFA Chapter, was awarded a $20,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the 90th annual Texas FFA State Convention held July 9-13 in Fort Worth. Grote was awarded for his qualifications in academic achievement, leadership, Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs, involvement in FFA Career and Leadership Development Events, and a personal interview.
Members of the Johnson City FFA chapter recently attended the Texas FFA convention in Fort Worth. Willow Grote, Kelan Painter, Westin Perrenoud, Logan Sadler, Kaitlyn Sisson, Brett Sultemeier, and Rylee Weirich worked together July 9-13 to expand their horizons and enrich each other’s leadership skills. Lorence “Larry” Ross Tanner, 70, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018 in Johnson City, TX. Larry was born in Fredericksburg to James Othello and Della Arrington Tanner. In addition to his parents, Larry was also preceded in death by his four siblings. Larry and his family were long-time members of the Christadelphian Church & Community in Stonewall. Gwendolyn “Gwen” Genell Bushnell Pickett, 90, of Johnson City, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at the LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City, Texas. Gwen was born December 8, 1927, in Johnson City, Texas to Deward and Ida Bushnell. Gwen graduated from Johnson City High School in 1947 and worked for Minnie Pilgrim in her restaurant.

On a December night in 1982 Larry Echo Hawk and his wife, Terry, were awakened by the ringing of the telephone. When Larry answered, all he heard was sobbing. Finally, his sister’s struggling voice said, “Tommy is dead.” A 20-year old drunk driver, speeding at more than 85 miles per hour, recklessly ran a stoplight crashing into the car driven by his youngest brother, Tommy, instantly killing him and his wife, Joan.
Rhonadale, known to family & friends as Rhoni was born in San Francisco and grew up in the San Joaquin Valley in California. Her parents immigrated from the Philippines and taught their children to be very proud Americans. Rhoni has always been interested in art is some form or another and took several college classes with the idea of teaching art one day.
On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, The Native Plant Society of Texas, Fredericksburg Chapter, features “Get the Dirt on Soil”, presented by David Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan offers a fascinating lecture on the living “skin” of the earth: soil. Soil is not “dirt”. Soil is home to a vibrant community of bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa, and micro-arthropods.
A Community Genealogy Workshop will be held on Saturday, August 11, in the Fellowship Hall of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 135 Methodist Encampment Road, Kerrville. This community service event is being sponsored and hosted by the Major James Kerr Chapter NSDAR, Kerrville and is open to anyone in Kerrville and the surrounding area who is interested and desires learning more information on genealogy.
