In the early 20th century, while people clustered in isolated villages in the Texas Hill Country, the outside world came as a voice through the air. Old-time radio was an escape from war, economic depression, prohibition and mundane circumstances. Through the magic of radio a person could experience faraway places he or she could never hope to reach. Radio was a buzzword long before the first wireless receiver appeared in Gillespie County.
The drama outside the Gillespie County Tax Office wasn’t a quarrel over assessed values, exemptions or tax rates. It wasn’t a political dispute between Democrats and Tea Party Republicans. Thirteen area songwriters gathered on Friday, November 22 in the basement of Liz on the Square in Blanco to perform original songs for the “Deep in the Dark of Texas ™” songwriting contest, sponsored by the Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky.
