BLANCO—Some veteran, successful athletes; a new face or two; and a face quite well-known, even though it was his first job as head coach of Track & Field in about a decade. “Always fun watching them compete, always some areas [they} may do a little better.” Oh, where are my manners? That’s Athletic Di- Strength, Speed, & Air Show rector Craig Slaughter, now the chief guru in track with the departure of Jarrett Vickers. Wyatt Casey, who went from the gridiron to winter training, easily captured the 400-meter race at the Panther Relays in a time of 50.99 seconds. “It’s a good time from which to work,” he told me. “I know what I’m capable of.” Casey ran a 50.3 indoors in a race in Arkansas. “I know what he meant to our team; every coach watching him knows how good he is.” Llano Coach Craig Slaughter commenting on Colton Center
“It was in the broadcast booth,” Llano football radio analyst, Lance Center, reminded me, “when I announced he wanted to play Pop Warner football—he had made the weight.” Maybe a decade later, Colton Center, at 275 pounds, has made the weight again, and he’ll be an offensive lineman for Mary Hardin-Baylor in the fall.
FREDERICKSBURG—The coach’s attitude is a good one, and that’s near the top of the list marked, “Urgent!” It’s awfully early, and that makes winter a good thing. Super Tuesdays are weeks in the future, so think of the struggles Governor Kasich and Dr. Carson are having. All of the above is similar to saying, “This won’t hurt.” Actually, pain-management should be on-call. “We’re trying to find the right lineup, the right spots,” declared the baseball Jackets’ head coach, ...
WIMBERLEY—The softball Jackets shook off a frightening Friday and authored a superb Saturday at the Texans’ tournament, February 27-28. In Game Two, Kamri Thompson and Molly Lindner had two hits each against Seminole. In the nightcap of a lengthy triple-header, Kendall Wenzel had two singles, stole three bases, scored tw ...
The Punchers finished their 2016 Basketball season with a loss to the #9 ranked Schulenburg Shorthorns but not without a fight. Mason showed no intimidation to the size and athleticism that the Shorthorns possessed by jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead playing great defense and shooting the ball extremely well.

Grandson Questions ‘Bobo’... Tim Skaggs is a bible-totin’/believin’/preachin’ parson in Brownwood, TX. He’s been caught up in God’s Holy Word for nigh onto a half-century, given high marks for interpreting scripture and its implications. However, four-year-old Pascal--his and wife Jamie’s first grandchild--fired a question at him a while back that set Tim back on his heels. Seated in the living room beside his grandfather, Pascal studied wall trophies Tim admits ...

Astute, long-time readers may recall a story I reported on several years ago, about The Attack of the Killer Alligator. This alligator showed up over near Houston or someplace, near as I can remember. I could probably find the story and check on that, if I was inclined to do such research.
When the weather’s turning warmer, and spring is near, many of us are just itching to put on our gardening gloves and start planting. A grand opportunity will present itself on Saturday, March 12! Declaring Our Independence - Viva Texas! On March 2, 1836, the colonists of Mexican Texas issued a Declaration of Independence from Mexican authority, oversight and oppression.
