A Victoria, Texas, man died Wednesday after drowning in the Llano River near Badu Park. Just after 2 p.m., the Llano Police Department was called to the park in reference to an accidental drowning. According to a city press release, Brian Holmbert, 52, drowned while trying to help his daughter. The daughter was caught in the river’s current while fishing, the press release said. A Washington state man died Sunday west of Llano in a tractor trailer rollover. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that a 2016 Volvo semi was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 29, approximately 11 miles west of Llano, when it left the right side of the roadway. The tractor trailer then slid across the road and hit another guard rail before stopping. The two people in the semi, a father and son, both of Bellingham, Wash., were transported to the Llano hospital.
After a two hour workshop on the 2016-2017 budget, the school board convened for its regular monthly meeting. Llano High School Assistant Principal Toby Fletcher and Band Director Scott Simmons recognized some 20 students who competed in the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Competition May 31. On hand to be congratulated were students Zach Beesley, Harmonee Wisdom and Amber Dyess. Consultant Dean Sharp reported on the progress of the 2014 bond election projects.
Bailey Bryant Ratliff opened up for business in 1942 at the corner of Oatman & Main Street offering Dodge and Plymouth vehicles to Llano. At the time, you could buy a Plymouth Special Deluxe for $935 or a Dodge ½ Ton Express Pick up for $651, but this was also the year after Pearl Harbor was bombed, so vehicles were a little scarce at the time.

Live theater at the Lantex Theater, the perfect venue for the latest production of the Llano Community Theatre, the “Dixie Swim Club” by Jones Hope Wooten Comedy. The Llano County 4-H meats judging teams recently competed at state 4-H roundup in College Station and earned a berth to a national competition to be held in January. The Llano teams qualified to participate at the state contest by placing first and second at the district contest this past spring.

Members of the Llano High School student council are hosting a softball tournament July 1-2 at the Moore Complex in Llano to benefit the Backpack Buddies program at all four Llano ISD campuses. Jim Sheets, who lives at Buchanan Dam, was one of 15 motorized parachute enthusiasts who spent the weekend flying about near the Llano airport. Others who came in did so from McAllen, Houston, Galveston and Baytown, and the name of the group is Bay Area Flyers. The group stayed at the River Way RV Resort and voted to come back to Llano next year.
The City of Llano has narrowed its field in the search for a city manager. After a 51-minute closed session during Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting, Mayor Mike Reagor announced that three finalists have been selected for the position. Reagor declined to name the three candidates after the meeting. BURNET—Spike Dykes thinks, “Expansion is stupid.” That may have been his only negative thought, June 17, at another packed-house and festive evening at the 13th annual Seton Kids’ Care-a- Van Tailgate Party. The Emory Bellard-Spike Dykes Golf Classic followed on the 18th. The Care-a-Van visits schools in the Highland Lakes area and provides free medical attention and exams for the youngsters.
MARBLE FALLS — The negatives outweighed the positives for Llano High on the first night of summer, as the 7-on-7, June meeting, continued at Mustang Stadium. Head coach Craig Slaughter, who is not allowed to coach but is allowed to talk, thought the play in the opener against Marble was “poor.” Nobody offered a rebuttal, which shows you how smart these young men are. The Mustangs won the 30-minute contest, 20-0.
Mrs. Nora Estelle Langehennig passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the age of 95. Nora is survived by her daughter-in-law, Dawn Langehennig and two grandchildren, Lauren and Wyatt Langehennig. Christine (Wills) Sawyer passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016 in Blanco, Texas at the age of 87. She was born January 18, 1929 in Llano County, Texas to Nancy (Brannon) and Waymon Wills. She married Joe Neal Sawyer February 18, 1948 in Llano, Texas. Christine was a housewife and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her husband, Joe Neal Sawyer of Blanco, Texas and son, William Gary Sawyer of Cherokee, Texas. Christine is preceded in death by her parents, son Joe H.
Steven Delane Boultinghouse, 70, of Oak Hill (SW Austin), passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016. Lunch/visitation was held at Cherokee Church of Christ in Cherokee, Texas from 11:30 a.m – 1:30 p.m. Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at Cherokee Cemetery in Cherokee, with Doug Suggs officiating. Steve was born on January 19, 1946 to Lolan and Mozelle (Moore) Boultinghouse in San Saba, Texas.
Travis Campbell is the new pastor at First Assembly of God Church in Llano. He lived in Georgetown his entire life until he met his wife, Karen, the “prettiest girl he had ever seen.” After they married in 2001, they moved to Marble Falls. Karen had come to the Hill Country of Central Texas as a small child and had been raised in Kingsland.
Dear Editor, I would like to reply to the response that was given by M.D. Harwell regarding the transgender issues. My goal was to open a conversation about this subject and obviously we have.
