The Llano News

August 24, 2016 Issue

A vision that took place over six months ago became a reality on Saturday night at a sold out, packed, Lantex Theater. What started out as a typical morning at the Llano Chamber of Commerce in early February, ended with the possibility of a new event at the Lantex. Marilyn Russell, who has a “dual citizenship, one in Houston, the other in Llano” according to Vicki Christensen, called the chamber office and asked executive director, Briley Mitchell, if he had heard of an Eagles Tribute Band ...
The 1,826 students who showed up for the first day of the 2016-2017 school year were greeted by many changes. Two new buildings at Llano Elementary saw 385 students. Packsaddle Elementary School welcomed 501 youngsters, while Llano Junior High saw 407, and Llano High School had 533. “It was truly a great first day,” Superintendent Casey Callahan said Monday night at the district school board meeting.
August 13, 2009 - just another day in history. A person born on this day will be 7 years old today. If that same person saved a dime every day starting at age 3, then by now that person has accumulated $146.90 today. For Angela Lewis, it is another kind of birthday.
Recent rains have brought about the end of this summer’s burn ban in Llano County. The Llano County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday morning to lift the county-wide burn ban. The burn ban was put in place July 11. Rainfall over the last week caused road closures at times in the county. County roads 102, 103 and 152 were each closed multiple times last week.
The Llano High School class of 2017, 100 strong, release balloons on Monday morning to celebrate their first day of the their last year at the school.
First-ever female Llano High School principal stresses teamwork
The 2016-17 school year marks the first that Llano High School will be helmed by a female principal, but Principal Jenifer Neatherlin is no stranger to the position. Neatherlin comes to Llano after two years as principal at Abel Junior High in Midland, a school of 1,000 students. That is double the students she will be responsible for this year.
There are several somewhat new phrases in sports I don’t like, but I’m only going to attack one today. Back in the day I would’ve attacked more, but now I’ve decided...No, I’m going to double my load to two today — the first one being, BACK IN THE DAY! Guess what everybody? “The Old Days” beat you to it by 342 years, and it has six more centuries on its contract. The main event here involves the walk-off hit, or something else, in baseball.
If Texas A&M still has Myles to go, Myles might get them there, along with a Knight in Shining Armor. My cliché allotment for the summer {autumn, too?} is over. Defensive end Myles Garrett, with 24 sacks the past two seasons, is considered the best defensive player in the SEC according to Lindy’s Magazine. Sporting News wants to join the conversation and insists, “{Garrett is} sometimes impossible to block.” Trevor Knight, the former Sooner who fired fou ...
SAN ANTONIO — ”Rudy Davalos...This is Your Life!” Few of you will remember that portion of the Golden Age of Television in the 1950s, but Rudy Davalos of Horseshoe Bay would have been a magnificent star of one of those episodes. And, although, on August 15, it wasn’t televised — with the show decades in retirement — a full ballroom at The Stable at Pearl did indeed get to know the man who was presented with the Lamar H ...
There’s no Llano football on the sports page here, because it’s all in the Sports Preview Special edition very close by. We did want to present a little “teaser.” Coach Craig Slaughter introduced to the “Meet the Jackets” crowd, August 16, his varsity football team, and we learned some of the boys’ nicknames. Here’s a sample: John “Rocket” Heflin. Ray “The Franchise” Dixon. Ben “The Snake” Walling.
Lauren (Parker) Timms decided it was time to go back to school in Llano. The 2009 LHS graduate went to college at Texas Tech and Texas State, coached one year in Junction, was a Jackets’ assistant in 2015-’16, and she’s now head coach of the high school cross country team.
There is the word, experience, on Llano High teams, running through much of this sports preview section, and no squad might have put in the miles — literally — that the cross country bunch has. And experience is no savior if it has been preceded by under-achievers who have simply blown out more candles recently. So, is there talent on this squad?
These women are the coaches of schools which have played the Jackets in volleyball this month. Here are their reactions: Kristen Bigott, Gateway Prep: “Llano is a very good team, obviously.” Jessica Withrow, Marble Falls: “Scrappy and energetic, fast girls on the back row.” Gina Lumpkins, Harper: “{Jackets} did a great job, good defense, served well.” Andrea Hutchins, Comfort: “Balls you didn’t think would come back did; kept the ball in play.” Heather Wilson, Johnson City:
Maybe he’s on a four-year plan, and this, by the way, is his fourth year in Llano. That would be head volleyball coach, John Black. He’s got a couple of decades experience in the sport, but he’s happier about the experience of his kids. Eight seniors, which means “Eight is Enough — maybe.” “Seniors want to have a successful season,” he told me near the beginning of two-a-days, August 1.
Injuries and a near-flawless performance on the field. “The worst thing about sports,” Llano High head coach Craig Slaughter termed the opening word here, while his team whipped Comanche in the second and final scrimmage. Luke Williams’ season is over — he was scheduled for knee surgery. Hunter Roemer suffered a dislocated shoulder.
Welcome back. Hope you were able to struggle along with no football, except for the few bones of NFL, ARENA 3, CFL, FBS, and Pop Warner Live; the Classic Games of the 1940s; Pro Days of Our Lives; Coaches’ Corner, Closet, Club, Classroom, Clipboard...ENOUGH! We get it. I’d just as soon be in Smithville, August 26, as anywhere else, as the Llano High Jackets open the season against the Tigers. “The kids are on the brink of playing with full confidence,” declared head coach Craig Slaughte ...
The family of Firmin Baye announces his arrival to a far better place. He was born 85 years ago in the family home in Groves, Texas—the only son in a family of 9. Throughout his life he earned a reputation for being generous, loyal, humble, and for having a keen sense of humor.
James (Jimmy) Waterston Jr.- son, brother, uncle, husband, dad, and veteran tossed about no more upon the rocks and shoals of life’s stormy seas, another sailor now safely moored in God’s restful harbor. James Waterston Jr. was born in Austin, Texas on July 13, 1930, son of James Waterston Sr.

Here’s one of these critically important essays that elicit the responses: “Don’t you have anything better to do? Is there something more important in your life about which to worry? Thank you. Answers: No and No. I have had back trouble recently — aren’t you sorry you made fun of me? — and it has caused pain in my left leg.
Dear Editor, About Llano Recycling Opportunity and Llano Special Opportunity Center, a reminder, that though somewhat connected, these are two separate entities. At present, Llano Recycling Opportunity (LRO) is in desperate need of a new baler for the facility and is actively seeking funds and community support to continue operation. It is a non-profit organization and contributions are fully tax deductible.
