Llano ISD Superintendent Casey Callahan is heading west. Callahan has accepted a position as executive director of the Region 15 Education Service Center in San Angelo, and he will begin his duties there in January. He will remain with Llano ISD through the end of the fall semester. “I’ve always thought very highly of that job,” Callahan said.
As I visit with friends from other area’s and tell them I live in Llano, they are quick to reply, “What a neat place to live.” I couldn’t agree more. We are blessed to have so many attributes such as the river, our many parks, downtown area, arena and event center, Main Street, the Lantex, golf course and on and on.
On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Llano Recycle Center celebrated 20 years of recycling in Llano with a mixer and party with the Llano Chamber of Commerce. The center opened its doors on Sept. 7, 1996 with a lot of “Pomp,” a radio remote, Bode Barker entertaining, and a list of prizes that would make any organization jealous.
Two people with Llano ties have new jobs with school districts in the state. Former Llano ISD superintendent Dennis Hill is the interim superintendent at Mexia ISD, while Shelly Schuessler is new the principal at Luling Primary School. After the most recent superintendent retired from Mexia ISD, the school board there asked Hill to step in while they search for someone to fill the permanent position.
The Llano County Commissioners received the annual report of the Texas Housing Foundation at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. The foundation has 216 housing units in Llano County, with 64 family units in Llano, 76 family units in Kingsland and 76 senior citizen family units in Kingsland, with rent ranging from $530 to $725 per month based on size. Johnny White, foundation board member, who is also pastor at The Church at Horseshoe Bay, said rent is based on a formula.
Hamm got the ‘car bug’ from his father, early in life
Cars and coaching has been the life for Ray Hamm. Hamm, who lives with his wife, Patricia, just outside Llano, is known for his love of classic vehicles and restoring them. If not that, then he might know him simply as “Coach.” Hamm moved to Llano in 1997 to take over as the LHS football coach. Though he had just graduated with a degree in accounting, Hamm just sort of fell into coaching. “I was spending all my time going to games and so I figured I might as well get paid for it,” ...
Additional alcoholic beverage options could be available in Llano establishments in the next year. The process to start a petition that would put a local option liquor election on the May 2017 ballot is underway. If at least 550 Llano residents who are registered voters sign the petition and the measure is passed by voters in May, establishments in Llano would be able to sell mixed drinks and all alcoholic beverages. Gail Lang, who said she has started the process as a citizen and not as a ...
Molly Lindner, left, gets the ball in perfect position as she goes on the attack in last Friday’s win over Burnet.
“Way back in 1996,” Jerry Land recalls as he talks about the founding of Llano Recycling Opportunities. The LRO celebrated its 20th year in existence this month, providing both recycling opportunities for county residents and opportunities for those with developmental delay and disability a place to become involved and be a part of the community. Land has been on the board since its beginning.
The Llano Youth Football and Cheer teams played host to the Burnet Bulldogs this past weekend with the 3rd/4th Grade Junior Varsity Jackets suffering their first loss of the season and the 5th/6th Grade Varsity Jackets recording their fourth win of the season. Both team’s records now stand at 4-1 on the season as they host the always tough Mason Punchers this upcoming Saturday at Jacket Stadium.
The Llano Junior High teams had another full slate of games as they hosted the Burnet Bulldogs at Jacket Stadium. All four of the games were close with each game decided by less than a touchdown. The Daubers now have an open week before battling the Navarro Panthers in their first district game of the season on Thursday, Oct.
The Llano Lady Dauber 8th Grade A Team took second place in the Burnet Middle School Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. The Jackets now have an open week before starting district play against Navarro on Thursday, Oct.
Kenzie Johnson dives for the ball in Junior Varsity action against Burnet on Friday. The JV ladies fell 2-1 in a classic against the Lady Bulldogs.
Ironic. The man who came in last in the Tour Championship on September 25, the day Arnold Palmer died at age 87, won $137,700. He should say, “Thanks, Mr. Palmer.” Everyone loved Arnie. I know we shouldn’t think of athletes as heroes, but many — including a Memphis, Tennessee teenager — thought of him as a hero or a superstar or a giant in golf in the 1960s. You hear babble about “So-and-so changed fishing, ping pong, or handball forever.” W ...
The score wasn’t pretty — 32-6, Burnet — and sometimes a second half that goes well is small consolation to fans, but Llano High head coach Craig Slaughter — who has the deciding vote — was pumped with the performance in Act Two’s 24 minutes. He was enthusiastic following the game and maybe more-so after he had seen the video. “Played to the bitter end,” he bellowed early Saturday morning.
FREDERICKSBURG — A tough course at Lady Bird Park did not prevent good showings by Llano High boys and girls in the Billies’ cross country meet, September 24. “Wonderful and difficult,” head coach Lauren Timms said of the layout — amended from previous contests here. “Perfect amount of everything, uphills and downhills.” That wasn’t the exact translation for the participants wearing Orange and Black.
LEANDER — Everything looked as fresh as a thee-year-old on her birthday in the Glenn High gymnasium, September 20, as the new school welcomed Llano for a district volleyball game. The Grizzlies only have freshmen and sophomores now, but they played well, and the Jackets had to rally for a 3-1 win. “Game One built momentum for Game Two,” head coach John Black said.
It was the biggest win in Llano High volleyball since the playoff year of 2012. May not seem like a long time to you, but it has been for head coach John Black, in his fourth year in Llano. Let’s just say the late summer and autumn of ’13, ’14, and ’15 have not produced a lot of calm with the cooler weather. So, with that drawn-out introduction, here’s the payoff: the Jackets cast aside an opening game setback to whip not-so-big-bad Burnet,  ...
HORSESHOE BAY — He wasn’t a quarterback till his senior year at Purcell High School in Cincinnati. What if...? Well, you know where this is leading. A coach at Purcell went up to defensive back/wide receiver Roger Staubach and said, “We want you to compete for the quarterback job. The other guys listen to you, and I saw you had a strong arm in baseball.” The Horseshoe Bay Sports Club, with a packed crowd — with which Staubach is familiar — heard Cowboys’ stories and more, Septembe ...

Dear Editor, I grew up in Llano County and have been playing the Llano Golf Course for over 60 years. I have played all over the world and the Llano Golf Course is the best deal going. It is beautiful, relaxing and in the best condition it has ever been. You don’t have to be a real golfer - just go out and enjoy. A special thanks to Casey Landers, Brian Smith and Larry Clanton for the many hours they put in making the course perfect.
Dear Editor, The Llano commissioners court selected a three person committee made up of Judge Mary Cunningham, Precinct 1 Commissioner Peter Jones and former library board member Pam Fowler. I never heard of this board member position. Aside of this fact, we see some politics entering the fray. Seems two members of the committee go to the same church as Jackie Cundieff and her husband is the pastor there.
