A new addition was added to the Llano County Historical Museum, take a look next time you drive by.
Work is underway to replace the south sluice gate on the dam, this includes electrical conduit and pouring cement for the electronic gate. Llano Utility Director Josh Becker gave us information on the work being done. “The new gate will be stainless steel with an electric operator. This will allow it to be opened and closed from the water plant and prevent the danger of having staff on the dam preforming this action.
It started in 1919, 98 years ago, and every year since then except for war years and a flood, the Llano Open Pro Rodeo has taken place the first weekend in June. Cowboys and cowgirls have come to Llano for roping, barrel racing, bronc and bull riding, rodeo royalty, and good clean family fun.
In a year of firsts for Llano Christian Academy, Saturday was certainly a stellar way to end a special school year. Braden Tuman became LCA’s first-ever graduate in front of a host of family members, friends and more with a ceremony at Chapel of the Hills Baptist Church in Buchanan Dam. “I think it’s an honor to be the first graduate.
The Llano City Council filled its vacancy at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. After a closed session to discuss the vacant position, the council voted 3-0-1 to appoint Kathryn Stephenson to the council. Councilman Craig Bauman abstained. Stephenson fills the unexpired term of Gail Lang, who vacated the position when she became mayor last month.
Allen Griffin from Dallas is the first out of the chute in Saturday’s performance of the Llano Open Pro Rodeo.
For a half decade that included no winning seasons on the varsity gridiron, there were some interesting times and moments—orchestrated by Head Coach Craig Slaughter. His time in Llano, though, is over. Slaughter will become defensive coordinator at Wall, a school which writes a new chapter on winning every autumn. “This was best for me and my family,” he told me, June 2, not long after his resignation became public.
Who would have thought a few weeks ago we’d be referring to Craig Slaughter and Stephen Campbell as “former” Llano High coaches? The Slaughter story is somewhere in our neighborhood, and at this residence we knock on the door of the future of young (34) Mr. Campbell. The Jackets’ head baseball coach for four years is heading to Class-5A Frisco High (north of Dallas but not as far as Denton) to become an assistant. “It’s an exciting challenge,” said Campbell.
And then there were two. When Craig Slaughter came to Llano in 2012 from Sweetwater, he brought with him three assistant coaches: Clint Easley, Bobby Williams, and Jarrett Vickers. Vickers left a year ago to become a head coach in Claude, which is near Amarillo. Easley (defensive coordinator) and Williams (offensive line coach)—with 11 years invested in the Bank of Slaughter (Clyde, Sweetwater, and Llano)—won’t be going to Wall, so what is their future? “I have no desire to leave,” Wi ...
I’m not sure when I first noticed that Craig Slaughter was one of the most energetic and enthusiastic coaches I’d had ever known. Must have been early-on, before his first year as Head Coach and Athletic Director in Llano in 2012. When it happened I was hooked. Anyone who was that passionate about his job had to be dedicated, had to care about the success of his players as well as his own. The basics of Coach Slaughter’s resignation are on Page One.

Dear Editor, I recently spent some time at the Baylor Scott & White hospital in Llano, I almost hated to leave. I was treated with kindness and love and have received two calls since I got home seeing if I am doing okay. I recommend it to anyone who needs health care. Sylvia Rhoades
