The number of members in the Llano High School Hall of Fame totals over 100 individuals and numerous teams, but each year the new list is an impressive one. Say hello to the Class of 2017, the 16th in the great tradition. Flay Deats Flay, a 1983 graduate, is one of the five individual inductees, and this includes a pair of Humanitarians. Deats broke the state record in the pole vault with a flight of 15 feet, nine inches.

A local business is fighting back after a national animal rights organization brought claims against it. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has charged that animals at The Pet Blood Bank in Cherokee are neglected and living in squalid conditions. However, those who have visited the facility have told a different story.
The Llano City Council looks to have bed and breakfast regulations in place by the new year. After a lengthy discussion and hearing several public comments, the council voted unanimously at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting to continue operating by the rules in place for the establishment of bed and breakfasts until new rules could be put in place.

For over 25 years, See You at the Pole has been about one simple act—prayer. SYATP is still about students uniting themselves in prayer before God interceding for their generation. It is held annually on the last Wednesday morning in September. In Llano, it is at the junior high school and high school, at 7:20 a.m.
September 1967. Lyndon Baines Johnson was president. The Vietnam War raged on. The ship Queen Mary arrives in Southampton in England on its last transatlantic crossing. And in Llano, Myrtle Oestreich and Lester Inman opened a barbecue restaurant “in a small red building with sawdust on the floors.” Fifty years later, Oestreich and her husband, Horace, are retiring after a half century in the business.
BURNET—The Bulldogs win again, but in a game with a strange personality and unusual subplots, a couple of things should be remembered about Llano’s 31-21 loss: Until there were seven seconds remaining in the first half, the contest was scoreless. The 10-point defeat was the Jackets’ second best effort in a 13-game losing streak against a school with twice the text books Llano has. “Defense was outstanding,” head coach Matt Green said, but he added, “Wish the offense could have b ...
Number One is usually no big deal for teams like Alabama, Duke, and Lake Travis, but it means plenty to the Llano High volleyball team, which won its first district match on the last Friday night of September. The Jackets swept Taylor, 25-14, 2521, and 25-23. “Offense had a much better flow and continuity to it,” said head coach, John Black.
HORSESHOE BAY— Two men approaching 50, one who’s already had several birthdays in that decade of life, and a youngster at age 42, gathered at Slick Rock Golf Course on the first day of October. Just like any other regular weekend players, who make a living between Thursdays and Sundays. 2003 PGA Champion, Shaun Micheel, was on hand.
The Llano Sub-Varsity teams tangled with the rival Burnet Bulldogs this past Thursday at Jacket Stadium and the fans were treated with two hotly contested ballgames. The Llano Freshman defense had to stop a last minute Bulldog drive deep in Llano territory to win their fourth game of the season and remain undefeated while the Llano JV suffered a tough loss in a defensive struggle to even up their record to 2-2 for the season. The Freshmen now turn their attention to playing Johnson City a ...
The Llano Jr. High Daubers traveled to Burnet this past Thursday evening to tangle with the Bulldogs in their third game of the year. The 7th Grade B team Daubers won going away by a score of 28-0. The 7th Grade A team Daubers thumped the Bulldogs 22-2, while the 8th Grade Daubers lost the third and final game of the night 24-22. The Daubers will now face the Johnson City Eagles this next Thursday in Llano at Jacket Stadium.
The Llano Youth Football and Cheer teams hosted the always tough Blanco Panthers this past weekend. Both teams competed well only to come up short with the Llano JV losing their first game of the season late in the fourth quarter while the Llano Varsity fell to the defending champion and undefeated Panthers. The Junior Varsity now gets a week off from playing while the Varsity Jackets head to Mason to take on the Punchers this next Saturday at 11:30 a.m. As the season winds to a conclusio ...

As we begin a new budget year, which began Oct. 1, I want to reflect on the past three years of my administration and specifically on this past month, which was National Preparedness Month. With uncanny timing, Texas, Louisiana, Florida and the Caribbean experienced a devastating month of natural disasters. These catastrophes make us more aware than ever of the importance of preparedness and gratitude to our first responders. While Llano County was not negatively affected by these storms, ...
Dear Editor, There are a lot of strong feelings about honoring our American flag, and rightly so. I propose that only our United States flag along with our great Texas flag flying proudly underneath is allowed on the flagpole next to the courthouse in Llano. We are all proud to be American citizens and citizens of the great state of Texas.
Dear Editor, FOUR COMPLEX QUESTIONS – ONE SIMPLE ANSWER 1) When is the time to relinquish one’s heritage and culture for the sake of another? 2) When is the appropriate time to no longer honor your fallen in public? 3) When is the time to forget your ancestral past and its heroes? 4) When should you allow – at any time – the removal or destruction of symbols and monuments pertaining to a regional heritage or culture just to replace them with the symbols and monuments of anot ...
