One by one, American flags were carefully lowered into the flaming pit to be properly disposed on Thursday morning. The tattered, torn and worn flags were given their respectful end during a brief retirement ceremony held on Flag Day behind Highland Lakes United Methodist Church in Buchanan Dam. Jenny Tucker, the church’s pastor, said it was the second consecutive year that the church has hosted the event.
The City of Llano is currently in Stage 1 of its Drought Contingency Plan, it was announced in an email blast early Tuesday afternoon. The blast also said the city will likely move to Stage 2 in the next 7-10 days. Stage 1 is voluntary water restrictions of landscape irrigation with automatic irrigation and hose-end sprinklers to twice a week on designated watering days during the hours of midnight to 10 a.m.

A four-way stop is likely to be put at the corner of College and Oak streets in Llano, it was decided at Monday’s city council meeting. The council directed city staff to follow the recommendation from interim police chief Joe Hamilton, who completed research in the area after the city received multiple complaints.

Shirley Joann Bender, 81, of Kingsland, passed away on May 28, 2018. She was born to Lafayette and Novella (Christopher) Melton on Dec. 8, 1936 in Byers, Texas. Shirley had many jobs during her lifetime, but considered being a serviceman’s wife was what she really enjoyed. She also enjoyed raising her family.
Scott Edward Lawless passed peacefully at home on June 13 from complications of appendiceal cancer. He was born to Bobby Dean Lawless and Geraldine (Scott) Lawless on Aug. 30, 1961, in Bay City, and raised in Rosenberg. He enjoyed living in Austin for decades, and most recently savored lake life in Lago Vista, but his family’s land on the Llano River was his heart’s home. On June 12, 2018, Marcella A. Cox, our forever Nonny, left this Earth to join her husband, Calvin, sons, Larry and Timothy, grandson, Benjamin, and mother, Lena in Heaven. She was preceeded in death by many beloved sister and brother in laws, friends and family members. Marcella was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and neighbor.
