Castell is home of one of the first churches established in Llano County. Much of the town’s history lies within Trinity United Methodist Church, but it is the settlers of Castell who paved the way for 167 years of worship and service for Methodists. A man of many who make up the rich history of the church is Reverend Charles A.
Saturday night the people of Llano really, truly gave meaning to the term Llano Community Center. They brought substance to the definition. Saturday night that building was more than just a big tin warehouse; it was a Center in which the Community of Llano put the C in Community. William Leach was born with an extremely rare brain disease known as Congenital Bilateral Perisylvian Polymicrogyria.
The Chamber of Commerce wants to thank everyone who came out to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Robinson’s Vintage and Custom Woodworks! By Carole Leeder A barn in northwest Llano county burned last Sunday night/early Monday morning. It is considered a total loss. The barn had just been renovated last year. Apparently, the hand tools that were in the barn were taken before the fire was started. It is estimated that the tools were valued at $13,000.
Far Flung Adventure Vacations are a great time to get away, relax, try something new, make new acquaintances, and maybe even run into some old friends while you’re out. Central Texas, Llano in particular, is becoming more of a destination for travelers throughout the United States and many from other countries.
The Llano Volunteer Fire Department hosted a Basic Ground Cover Course provided by the Texas A&M Forest Service. Instructor for the day was Nicole Castillon, Regional Fire Coordinator, Central Branch. Firefighters throughout the county from Llano, Castell, Valley Spring, Buchannan, and Sunrise Beach were in attendance for the training. The firefighters were provided a basic understanding of the principles of wildland firefighting, wildfire terminology, fire behavior, locating the fire, wild ...
On Friday, July 12, Evan Creviston-Wines, age 16 (R), and his friend Micheal Najar, age 15 (L), caught a 30-pound, 39 inch flathead catfish at Badu Park. He was caught with a reel and rod with bluegill bait. Courtesy photo.
It is hard to believe but it is time to start working on our Mixer Schedule for 2020. They are held on the third Tuesday of every month from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. and are designed to get like-minded business folks together for a time of networking and bonding. Those that host provide snacks, and if they want, adult beverages.
New Board of Directors On Wednesday, June 10 The Llano Lions Club met at Inman’s Kitchen BBQ. The guest speaker was Gilbert Bennett, Llano County’s new Emergency Management Coordinator. Below are helpful tips that Bennett discussed in his presentation: • Know two ways out—of your home, office, theater, restaurants, etc. • Never be more than 7 floors high without an evacuation plan; the newest ladder carried by firetrucks can only reach the seventh floor. • Have the prope ...
By Luke Clayton I was well into my twenties before I set down to a platter of catfish fillets. I was raised eating catfish either fried whole or cut into ‘steaks.’ My Dad probably didn’t even know what a ‘fillet’ was. Had he known, I’m positive he would have considered the practice of filleting a waste of good fish! The bigger catfish were ‘steaked’ or cut, bone-in, into frying size chunks, and smaller catfish, between 10-12 inches, that fit into a frying pan whole were si ...
The Rock’N Riverfest held Saturday, July 6 was a complete success. It is estimated that over 1,000 people attended the event held at Badu Park on the shores of the Llano River. It was good to see so many families celebrating our nation’s independence. There were 35 jet skiers that competed in the jet ski races.
‘Texas Ready’ Call is Issued The Texas Department of State Health Services on July 8 urged Texans to get “Texas Ready” for natural and manmade disasters by being informed, making a plan and building a disaster preparation kit that contains what a household needs to survive for at least three days. “Texas has more declared disasters than any other state, so we all have to be Texas Ready at all times,” said Dr.
You get your money’s worth if you listen to Big 12 Commissioner, Bob Bowlsby. He delivered his annual keynote address at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, July 15, and that talk kicked off Big 12 Conference Football Media Days. Years ago… “This is college football’s 150th anniversary. The first game was Princeton and Rutgers.” The gridiron today: “It’s the best regular season in all of sports, especially the months of October and November.” Not in the stands? “The new digit ...
I don’t know if you noticed, but the Big 12 Media folks named Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger as the conference preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Please hold your applause till the end, which will be soon. The Defensive Player of the Year—in midsummer—is Kenneth Murray of Oklahoma, a linebacker. Good picks.
Time for our (on again, off again) annual trip down through the years—in sports, of course. Here’s the way it works: Since this is 2019, we’ll take a look at what happened in the final year of every decade, 2009 back to 1909. You may have guessed that after reading the clever headline.
It was the greatest match in Grand Slam history in tennis. Challenge me if you will, but here are my reasons: it was Roger Federer against Novak Djokovic—one vs. three in all-time Slam wins (20-15); it was Wimbledon, its own number one among the four majors. Federer is 37 years old, about 50 in the age of a baseball player, 55 in golf, 60 in horse racing (the jockey, not the horse).

Starting on the fall season garden. Yes, it is July and a stormy one at that, with high winds and cloudy skies that are turning our spring summer gardens into a mess! But after the downed limbs are removed and the tomatoes righted, we are in a good place to prepare for the fall garden. The rotation of crops and recycling of space is known as "succession planting."
