Residents of Llano County should watch out for higher water levels this week. Water levels in the Llano River and the Highland Lakes will continue to be higher than normal as additional rain is expected to continue this week. Tuesday brought several road closures in Llano County. As of 1:45 p.m., Johnson Creek at Rio Llano was closed, in addition to 2323 (Prairie Mountain Road), County Road 152 at the Llano city limits and CR 307 (Kingsland slab).
The Llano Rodeo is back for its 81st year this weekend. The event, which started in 1919 and has only been canceled by flood or war, will be held Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 5 p.m. with performances at 7:30 p.m. each night at the John L. Kuykendall Arena. Tickets are available from the rodeo queen contestants, at the Llano Chamber of Commerce and at the gate. Mutton Bustin’, a thrill for participants and spectators, will open the rodeo each night.
It almost seems that Llano and Ronald Burton became intertwined by chance. Burton, a Mississippi native, was first in Llano to perform at its annual rodeo just a few short years ago during the filming of ‘Man in the Can,’ the film covering his journey as a rodeo clown. Llano embraced Burton and the film, and the two are now intertwined.
There will be a new commissioner in Precinct 3 for Llano County as challenger Mike Sandoval upended incumbent Ron Wilson in Tuesday’s Republican Party primary runoff election. Also on Tuesday, incumbent Bill Blackburn handily won the primary for sheriff against challenger James Schilling, who withdrew from the race last month. U.S. Representative K. Michael Conaway (R-Texas) will hold a town hall in Llano on Thursday, June 2. The town hall will be held in the district courtroom at the Llano County Court House at 10 a.m. The town hall is open to members of the media and the public. Conaway represents 36 counties in west and central Texas, including Llano County.

Out of the LHS 2016 graduating class of 106 students, Raychel Beasley ranks second and will be giving the salutatorian speech. What brought her grade point average all the way down to 4.5800? “In freshman year I made an 89 in geography in the last six weeks,” she said. “But I also have multiple hundreds.” Beasley said the secret of her success was a bit of old-fashioned hard work. “I study every night after eating supper with the family,” she said.
Cory Clausen tops the 2016 senior class of 106 Llano High School students with a grade point average of 4.6263. He plans to attend Texas A&M University. He wants to study chemical engineering and enter a career in pharmaceuticals. “I want to bring down the high price of medicine,” he said. Clausen has had a well-rounded high school career.
