There will be a new commissioner in Precinct 3 for Llano County as challenger Mike Sandoval upended incumbent Ron Wilson in Tuesday’s Republican Party primary runoff election. Also on Tuesday, incumbent Bill Blackburn handily won the primary for sheriff against challenger James Schilling, who withdrew from the race last month. Schilling’s name had to remain on the ballot, however, due to state law. In the Precinct 3 commissioner race, Sandoval won by a 201 (52.07 percent) to 185 (47.93 perc ...

From “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” to “Octopus Garden”; from “These Boots Are Made For Walking” to “Give Peace a Chance,” the dancers of Wildflower Dance Studio entertained Llano audiences for two powerful nights. Just barely a year into existence, the dance studio has already turned out two extremely well done shows, the first in December with “The Nutcracker,” and this weekend “Cinderella.” The Friday and Saturday presentations included a recital portion titled “A Beatles Antho ...

Out of the LHS 2016 graduating class of 106 students, Raychel Beasley ranks second and will be giving the salutatorian speech. What brought her grade point average all the way down to 4.5800? “In freshman year I made an 89 in geography in the last six weeks,” she said. “But I also have multiple hundreds.” Beasley said the secret of her success was a bit of old-fashioned hard work. “I study every night after eating supper with the family,” she said.
Cory Clausen tops the 2016 senior class of 106 Llano High School students with a grade point average of 4.6263. He plans to attend Texas A&M University. He wants to study chemical engineering and enter a career in pharmaceuticals. “I want to bring down the high price of medicine,” he said. Clausen has had a well-rounded high school career.
The Llano County Commissioners heard a presentation on floodgate notification in a brief regularly scheduled meeting Monday morning. Ron Anderson, assistant emergency management coordinator for Llano County, provided information on FONS (Floodgate Operation Notification System) provided by the Lower Colorado River Authority. The notification system informs the public of changes to the floodgate operations in dams operated by the LCRA.

I have written a bunch of stories on the Baylor football Bears, and I have really enjoyed their success—2010-2015. They won two Big 12 titles in that span, played in six consecutive bowls and won three. Baylor’s finest half-dozen year stretch in its history. The victories made for good reading and writing — for me — I graduated from BU in 1965. I would get — and deservedly so — a D-minus if I failed to address what is happening now in Waco.
BURNET—The title of the 1999 movie, Varsity Blues, describes some of Llano’s three 7-on-7 visits to the practice fields of its rival. There was enough pain, May 23, that we thought we’d let the junior varsity and freshmen perform in our opening act while the older guys rehab.  “Good ball skills—both teams 2-0 tonight,” related head coach Craig Slaughter.
Easy guys! We need those lads in August and beyond! The Greenwood Brothers--Mason, on the floor on the left, and Brent, are being grabbed in a “friendly” game of Dodge Ball. Mr. Fletcher, the assistant principal, is taking care of Mason, and Coach Slaughter nails Brent. Colton Center is on the right, taking care of himself.
Special Olympian Mitch Dunn taught us a lot about bravery and perseverance at the track and field event at Bible Stadium in Leander on May 6.  Mitch was scheduled to race the 25 meter obstacle and 50 meter Slalom power wheelchair races. However, the joy stick which controls his power chair began to malfunction.  He was able to drive his chair, but it was sporadic.
A number of young men and women go to Europe following their graduation from college. Some are on vacation, while others work in private jobs or are sent abroad by the military. Not too many play football with the end of the World League of American Football, which endured from 1991 to 2007. It is now present day, and we make a lengthy touchdown run to Germany, where there are two leagues, and if you need to reach Preston Rabb (LHS Class of 2011), he’s in one of them. “Since I was hurt my s ...

Dear Editor, This past week, Sammy was admitted to the Llano hospital by his doctor of many years, Dr. David Hoerster. We can’t say enough about the care he received while a patient at Llano Hospital. The nurses were professional, friendly and so helpful. When he was discharged, the nurse explained the discharge instructions thoroughly. If hospitalization is required again (and we have a choice of hospitals), we will pick Llano Hospital, hands down. Sammy and Janice Garrett Bertram, Texas
Dear Editor, The Llano Recycling Opportunities is proud to have provided the citizens of Llano County with a drop-off recycling center which was opened in September 1996. We recently had a person who decided to dispose several injection needles used for medication or drugs on the drop-off dock. This is not an item which the LRO accepts for recycling.
