Acting police chief will be temporary position
The City of Llano should have a new interim/acting police chief in the near future. The city council unanimously voted Monday to authorize City Manager Scott Edmonson to hire an acting police chief who will also have the authority to conduct investigations within the police department. The council passed the motion after a brief closed session. The motion stated, “The city manager is authorized to negotiate and approve a contract with a person or entity to provide services as the acting ...
Non-related Cunninghams face off in first name duel
The Llano County Tea Party told candidates for Republican nominations in the March 6 primary that the forum on the first night of February at the American Legion Hall was going to be “civil.” In all the face-offs, very much including the county judge’s contest, the five-letter word was adhered to as much as its companions—mommy and apple in apple pie—would have been. The following are comments from Judge Mary Cunningham and challenger Ron Cunningham.
It was part revival, part sales pitch as Democrats met Saturday to hear from their candidates. In Marble Falls, Democratic Party groups from Llano, Burnet and Bianco counties met to hear speeches and visit with candidates for state house, congress, agriculture commissioner, lieutenant governor and governor. Candidates spoke excitedly about a “blue tsunami” of candidates and voters that they expect to hit Texas. Jennie Lou Leeder of Llano is one of two Democrats running for U.S.
Local candidates on the March 6 primary ballot for the Republican Party spoke to voters last Thursday at the Llano Tea Party’s forum held at the American Legion Hall. Contested positions on the ballot in Llano County are for county judge (see page 1 for story), county clerk, precinct 2 county commissioner, precinct 1 justice of the peace and precinct 2 justice of the peace. For county clerk, incumbent Marci Hadeler faces challenger Clay Etter.
It happens every year. Llano comes together for a few hours for a little treasure hunting for some, and for others, a time to part ways with items that are no longer needed. The name changed from City-wide Garage Sale last year, after an organization in Austin trademarked the name, to Llano Trade Day.
BRIDGING BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY
For the 94th year, Llano came together on Tuesday night to celebrate the best of the best of the town, and the Community Awards Banquet sponsored by the Llano Chamber of Commerce was one for the ages. “We had more nominees this year than ever before, especially in the Citizen of the Year category,” said Briley Mitchell, chamber executive director.
Indictments for four Llano Police officers and a former officer were issued by a Llano County Grand Jury on Monday. Chief Kevin Ratliff, officers Jared Latta, Aimee Shannon and Grant Harden, and former officer Lisa Sloan were indicted by the grand jury. Ratliff, Latta and Shannon have been on paid leave since Jan.
Superintendent Mac Edwards received a one-year contract extension from the Llano ISD board of trustees. After a closed session to evaluate Edwards’ contract at the Jan. 22 school board meeting, board members voted to extend it for one year and authorize the board president to execute the contract. It has been the board’s policy to keep a superintendent on a three-year contract if they are happy with his work. Edwards is in his first year as LISD superintendent.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, Llano High School students competed at the Burnet Bulldog Invitational UIL Academics and Speech/Debate Meet at Burnet High School. Twenty-six students represented LHS.  Senior Morgan Thibodeaux earned a first place medal in Poetry reading, an Oral Interpretation event.  The finals round was one of the toughest competitions judges had seen this year, reported several as they submitted their votes.  Congratulations Morgan!
The kickoff of the highest priority highway project in Llano County was announced Monday at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) offices in Austin. TxDOT announced that State Hwy. 29 from RM 1431 to RM 2241 will be converted to a “Super 2” highway, which means that passing lanes will be added in various locations. “This project will dramatically increase traffic safety and efficiency along SH 29 between RM 1431 and RM 2241 into the City of Llano by creating a “Super 2,
