HORSESHOE BAY—When you think of major champions in men’s tennis, some of the names that register quickly are: Tilden and Gonzales; Kramer and Laver; McEnroe, Connors and Borg; Sampras and Federer; and Djokovic and Nadal. The Bryans of California have done more than all but a couple. They are—without question—the best doubles team in the history of the game.
LIBERTY HILL—Courtney Reina claimed her first Area round gold medal in her last Area Meet, April 15, and she leads two Llano High girls in individual contests and one Lady Jacket relay team to the Region IV Meet in Kingsville, April 26-27. Quincy Prince will be the lone Llano boy making the trip, but Aiden Cuthbertson set a school record in the triple jump in the shadow of Panther Stadium. Reina threw the shot put, 39 feet, one inch, to win by 21 inches in an eight-girl gathering that las ...
It was another week that was awfully good for Llano baseball, which possesses jewels on the 2019 diamond: Fredericksburg at home and a visit to Wimberley. (See that story about a meter away.) The Jackets entered the Tuesday-Friday contests 3-1 in district, following a 4-3 loss at Boerne. LHS 4, Fred 2 The way Justin Low was pitching into the sixth inning, April 9, this appeared to be a rather nonchalant victory over the Billies.
WIMBERLEY—You want a statistic you’re going to love? How about this: the baseball Yellow Jackets have played Lampasas, Brownwood, Burnet, Fredericksburg and the Texans eight times in 2019 and are 8-0. Everyone on this page compares in size to LHS about like a Buick compares to a Smart Car. The latest win arrived here nicely wrapped, April 12, as Llano recorded a 7-4 victory to sweep two games from the Texans in the last three weeks.
The Junior Justins. JL and JL. Righties. And I won’t forget the bats in Llano High’s baseball lineup. Taking their show on the road, March 29, the Jackets belted Bandera, 6-0, for a 2-0 start in 28-4A. Justin Lange pitched a four-hitter, and he and Justin Low are on a combined scoreless-district streak of 13 innings. “Outstanding,” is Head Coach Todd Doucet’s favorite word, concerning this pair of aces.
AUSTIN—It is rare that you see Anna Casey near the back of the pack, but there are a couple of reasons not to panic, on top of the fact that I was instructed not to do so myself by coaches Golemon and Withrow. The Llano High sophomore, on Saturday March 30, was part of a stellar 92nd Texas Relays field—good redundancy there—and she ran a mighty fine 5:09.59 for the 1600 meters.
AUSTIN—Seven Llano boys got a feel for college athletic life, March 28-29, at the Texas Relays, as two Jacket teams took part in the high school 4x100 and 4x400-meter races. “I’m happy for the kids,” said Head Coach Ryan Priem. “What a cool experience to run the relays. We came here to compete, and that’s what we did.” No medals were won by Llano on UT’s splendid Mike Myers Stadium track, but the comments from the young men revealed how special the visit was. 4x4 Chris ...
And the four are gone. First it was Jarrett Vickers, then Craig Slaughter, followed by Bobby Williams, and now Clint Easley is putting aside football, but not Llano ISD. That group was led to the gridiron here by Slaughter, the Head Coach, in 2012. “It’s been on my mind for several years,” said Easley, the defensive coordinator.
The Llano High softball team, in Boerne, March 26, suffered its third one-run loss in district play and then was beaten, 8-3, against Fredericksburg, March 29. The Lady Jackets headed into the April 2 game at Wimberley with a 1-4 record at the halfway point of 28-4A play—14-6 overall. Boerne 11, LHS 10 “Ten ought to be enough,” said Head Coach, Beau Burnett, “but Boerne’s lineup is very dangerous—strong hitters and speed.” Llano opened with a 4-0 lead.
