For those of us who thought of Ben Walling as a quarterback, running back or linebacker, we were surprised to see he would wind
up at Cisco College as a Team Roper, but that’s where he’s heading.
“I started roping at age four,” he told me in a lengthy email, “at Tyler Magnus’s ranch in Valley Spring.” He was competing at five.
“I first started swinging the rope backwards because I was left handed.” He got it right and became a righty.
LAMPASAS—The Llano boys’ basketball Jackets opened the June league to solid reviews from their head coach after beating the host Badgers and losing a close one to Goldthwaite, June 7.
Chris Armstrong said the 47-36 victory was a “good win—good to experience success against those guys. We built up a big lead,” and the game, “was not that close.”
While Armstrong, heading into his second year in Llano, said statistics weren’t kept officially, Kendall Downey led all scorers, w ...
It has been a magnificent run for a bunch of the boys and girls in Llano High sports the last few years.
Dakoda Trull became the “Strongest Boy in the State,” March 24 in Abilene in powerlifting. He was a landslide winner in the 275-pound class, and no one was very close from the super heavyweights.
I was in the hospital the last couple of weeks for back surgery, but this message isn’t going to be a lumbar this and a fusion that, and I’m not going to tell you my doctor is the 79th best surgeon west of Birmingham—England, not Alabama.
We’re going to discuss hospital food, something more criticized than a leaky tent on campout night.
I am here to tell you the food at the Baylor Scott and White Regional Medical Center and the Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital, also in Lakeway, and s ...

A high school basketball coach, who has had a successful—winning—career, will come to Llano to try to repeat his past and revive the Llano Lady Jackets’ program.
Meet Todd Lange, most recently from Anson, which is near Abilene. Victories are not the only item on his resume. This man has energy.
Couple of things. You’re not reading last week’s Llano News, and Anna Casey—The Early Years is not going to replace the crossword puzzle as a regular feature, but we figured (okay, I figured) since the freshman
won two state championships, May 12, she deserved two editions worth of attention. Actually, Athletic Director Matt Green assured me it was fine, since 7-on-7 was cancelled, May 21.
“I’ve never really run for fun,” Anna told me via email.
FREDERICKSBURG—Volleyball season is not as far away as you might think. One of the few new faces will be the head coach, Dianna Heiner, most recently of Bandera.
This report is not on Ms. Heiner, introduced in this section several weeks ago, but on one night’s play of the Lady Jackets in the Fredericksburg league, which certainly offered plenty of reps—repetitions—as the league teams met two nights a week this month.
In the opening game, May 15, against Harper, Lauren Tudyk produc ...
HORSESHOE BAY—The man who owns The Green Jacket took one swing on the lush, green Ram Rock golf course, May 22, to help re-open Ram after significant work was done on the course.
San Antonio-born Patrick Reed, who won the Masters with a magnificent score of 15-under par, 273, drove off the first hole with the ceremonial first tee shot and then answered questions from the media.
Two races. Two school records. Two terrific 200s. Two wins in each postseason event. Two State Championships. Two good. Two words: Anna Casey. The freshman has galloped into Llano High School history. She was simply better than some of us thought. Me of little faith.
“Best feeling ever,” Anna told reporters.
