As part of its fourth annual Red in Fred heart health campaign in February, Hill Country Memorial will offer free cardiac risk assessments for women and men. “Understanding your risk for heart disease is a great first step toward a healthier heart,” said Patsy Glasscock, RN, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at HCM.
Our Cowgirls are making history! Come support Coach Jeff Guice, his staff and the Mason Cowgirls as they travel to the UIL FINAL FOUR STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN SAN ANTONIO! Make plans to help send off the Cowgirls in the traditional Mason style! The bus will leave at approximately 9:15 Thursday morning, and travel down College Street, turn on Moody Street and go around the square for a BIG TIME MASON SENDOFF!
“Boss” Lion Jim Heidelberg convened the weekly meeting of the Mason Lions Club on February 20. Thirty-four members and four guests were present. Lion Charlie Reichenau introduced his guests, wife Linda, and his office manager, Deborah Smith. Lion Chad Schmidt welcomed his brother, Matt, and told the members that Matt was becoming a new member of the Mason Lions.
Congratulations to the Puncher Cowgirls Basketball team for their win last weekend and good luck for the big game on Friday! The students and sports teams are real “stars” in our town, and have proved many times over their commitment and competence in being the very best in Texas. Recently the High School special projects group called the Young Pioneers has added a new direction to their program to support and educate the public regarding some other stars in Mason.
What a wonderful week of rain. Reports varied from 2 to 4 inches. Our gauge at the house must have frozen during the last cold snap; it is officially busted. Grandson John and I cleaned some of the garden. I am ready for asparagus, so we trimmed up the bed.

TDS, a peer-to-peer program focusing on the prevention of teen motor vehicle crashes—the leading cause of injury and death for teens in the United States—helps students learn about the risks they face behind the wheel and supports them in spreading safe driving messages to their school and community. The next meeting of the local unit of TRTA is Thursday, March 1, beginning at 11 A.M., at the Menard Community Center. The meeting will include a covered-dish luncheon after the business meeting and program. An interesting program about the Menard Presidio will be presented. Following the meeting, anyone who would like to do so is invited to car pool for a tour of the Presidio. The Peregrino Band from Mason will be opening the festival to be held on April 7, 2018, at Wau-Ban-See Ranch in Camp San Saba, Texas. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available to purchase and proceeds will benefit another high school organization. On Friday, March 2 (5-9pm) and Saturday, March 3 (9am-5pm) Sweet Pickin’s Vintage Fair (a vintage market) will be held in the event barns of Lea Lou Co-Op located on Mason’s downtown square. One of the fun things about vintage markets is that you never know what gems you will come across.
It’s not too late to order your beautiful springtime Geraniums from the Steady Steps Children’s Weekday Ministry “Geraniums Fundraiser”! Orders will be taken until March 9th and order forms can be found at various local businesses or stop by the Steady Steps Office, located at 224 Broad Street. The proceeds from this fundraiser assist in the daily operations of our children’s weekday ministry and help us to keep our tuition at a rate that is accessible for all.

The annual Book and Bake Sale is the primary fundraiser for the Friends of the Library. We need your book donations as soon as possible. Book donations can be dropped off at the Library during working hours. If you have books to donate, please pack them in cardboard boxes. Use separate boxes for fiction and nonfiction, if possible.

There will be a Bake Sale to benefit Daryl Watson this Saturday, March 3rd from 8:30-sold out, in front of the law offices of Geistweidt & Whitworth, on the southeast corner of the Mason Square. Daryl is in need of assistance with medical expenses incurred by cancer treatments. Daryl, pictured with his wife, Kim, has participated in several fundraising efforts in the Mason community, including a special concert at the Odeon in support of Hurricane Harvey victims.

The Mason County Commissioners' Court has lifted the burn ban for Mason County. However, County Judge Jerry Bearden reminds residents that a tremendous amount of fuel remains in area pastures, and extreme caution should be taken when conducting any type of burn. Residents are also requested to call the County prior to burning any brushpiles or fields so that the dispatcher is aware of the location of any active burns occurring in the county.

I just have to take a moment to tell how much my husband Craig and I (and the rest of the audience) enjoyed Hungrytown last week. Almost all the songs they performed were original, and the couple is delightful! They’re continuing on westward, and I’ve invited them back next year, so if you missed them, you’ll have another chance to be entertained!
Kodak moment Some men are born to greatness. Others sometimes get to have dinner with it. Wyman Meinzer and Earl Nottingham sat across the table from me last Friday night at the 60th Annual Texas Outdoor Writers Association conference in League City. Wyman was the keynote speaker for the conference, and is one of the two best photographers in Texas, in my opinion.
Mort’s Migraine Magnified… Aunt Maude smirks often, corrects gently and forgives daily. Oh, she also looks the other way regularly to avoid getting the “shakes.” She has attained the same age as my 105-year-old Uncle Mort, and has pretty much figured out how to maintain peace and harmony in their home nestled down in the thicket.
