Announced here in the Mason News three weeks ago; The Odeon Preservation Association has kicked-off the last major project of its 25 year journey to renovate The Odeon Theater.
Beginning this weekend - NEW, MODERN, COMFORTABLE theater seating and an updated sound system will be installed! These two key projects mark the conclusion of 25 years of commitment, focus and hard work from EVERYONE in Mason and “Friends of The Odeon” from all over Texas, the US and around the world.
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ Hasanai “Go” Chanriang (and Mason High School graduate),will compete at the NCAA Division III Championships for the third time in his career this weekend in Geneva, Ohio.
Chanriang qualified for the NCAAs in the 400 meter hurdles and is also part of the 4x400 relay team. His season-best time is a 52.96, which is the seventh-fastest time in the field on the year.

Fifth & sixth graders (110) from Mason ISD attended the Farm & Ranch Safety Day sponsored by the Mason County Soil & Water Conservation District on May 16th at the Community Building.
Students learned a variety of safety topics including tractor & lawn mower safety, seatbelt safety, firearm safety, snake safety, electrical safety, ATV & UTV safety, animal safety, equipment & fire procedures from Mason & Loyal Valley Fire Departments.
Although the threat of wildfires is currently low to moderate for much of the Lone Star State, Texans are still encouraged to be cautious when working or cooking outdoors, especially in dry areas.
“We had a fairly wet winter, but parts of the area are drying out again,” Shannon Worrell, Mason County Farm Bureau president, said.
Head Lion, Marty Benson, after opening the May 21st meeting of the Mason Lions Club, turned the program over to Lion Michael Cope who presented an informative outline of the current work of the Mason ISD Scholarship Foundation. His program provided a timely follow up on last Monday night’s scholarship awards to the Mason High School class of 2019.
The benefactor originating the Mason ISD Scholarship Foundation was Geneva Rogers Keller.
The City is continuing to move forward with the many summer jobs that are needed any every small community, including the work to provide for the pool to be open with the end of school. There has been one issue that has created a certain level of concern in the past week, and I would like to address this and provide up-to-date information to be sure that our residents and the community as a whole are aware of the considerations.

Enrollment for the 2019 Summer Program is underway for Kingdom Kids, River of Life’s Mom’s Day Out program. Kingdom Kids mission is to provide a loving, Christ-centered environment where children are nurtured and the mother’s needs are met. Summer activities for children ages 3 months to 5th grade include age appropriate Bible stories, music time, crafts, baking, and recreation time.
This summer we will be offering (2) three week sessions for ages 3 months – 5th grade.

The City of Mason will be holding a City Wide Tire Clean-Up scheduled to begin on Monday, June 10th, 2019 and continue through Friday, June 14th, 2019. All tires can be dropped off at the Recycling Center during the hours of 7am – 5pm, Monday – Friday. The Recycling Center is located at 510 N.

In May, children read about a greedy pug and learned about carrot seeds and how carrots grow. They planted seeds to take home, made a gift and card for their mothers, and constructed a bobble-head puppy that looked a lot like Pig the Pug!
Come Monday, June 3, to hear a story about Dad and stay to make a special gift especially for him for Father’s Day.
Storytime is held Mondays at 10:30 A.M.
Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who absolutely insist on enjoying life to the fullest, or at least making it out of our pajamas by noon, had a wonderful gathering in May at the community room of Silverleaf Apartments. Shirley Siler hosted 8 Scarlet Punchers for a potluck lunch, and, as usual, the food was delicious, the fellowship was delightful, and the prizes were outstanding.

The Odeon theater in Mason, Texas presents two great Texas performers together on-stage June 22 at 7:00PM. Radney Foster and Darden Smith present their Songs-Books-Jokes and Tears performance. Between them, Radney Foster and Darden Smith have released over two dozen albums, written hundreds of songs, played thousands of shows and logged millions of miles getting there and back.

Time for a Summer Break!
Last Friday was the final day of class for Mason I.S.D. students. With almost a full week left in the month of May, students are already in full summer vacation mode.
The effects of summer vacation are already noticeable. This morning, traffic around the square was much quieter and less hectic.

In my effort to get as many folks as possible to do some baking, I've been researching lots of recipes to see if there is a really quick and easy way for busy cooks to put some home-made goodies on the table. The Jiffy Mix company has been around a long time, and they make a lot more mixes than just Corn Bread Muffin Mix!
Summer Reading will begin next week on Monday, June 3! Read to Swim runs Mondays through Thursdays from 1:00-2:00 P.M. The program is for children who will be in Grades K-5 next school year. Every time children come in and read for thirty minutes, they’ll get a free pass to swim or to get free ice cream at Dairy Queen, and their names will go in the box for the drawings for a Kids’ Edition Kindle and four gift cards from Walmart for $100, $75, $50, and $25.
The Ban Wagon
Banning things is not a new concept. Back in the late 19th century, the Boston city council started banning any book, play, or song they thought was suggestive or risqué. And to a city council made up entirely of Puritans and Irish Catholics, pretty much everything was suggestive or risqué.

Surely it was a slow news day on both coasts recently.
In Rhode Island, they unrolled fireman-grade water hoses to wash egg from the faces of school board members, and in California, a small, “highest-scale” coffee spot sold out of a new magical coffee brew despite its introductory price of $75 PER CUP.
Left-coast citizens who invite friends to join them for cups of joe--with addition of taxes and tips--risk seeing a couple of $100 bills go up in smoke, and ...
