I have been asked a number of questions about my May 22nd article on options for landfills for our hometown. Once Mason’s current landfill is full, we no longer qualify for the same type of landfill we currently operate per state regulations. It appears we have 2 basic choices for our future landfill. First let me say there will be NO vote on whether or not to go forward with a Type 1 landfill in our June 17th City Commissioners meeting.

Mason Paige Garrett recently completed a very rewarding and highly memorable junior year at Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill High School. Exemplifying what defines a student-athlete, she excelled both academically and athletically. Mason was a member of the undefeated (37-0) Class 3A State Champion Lady Devils basketball team. She scored her 1,000th career point in the 4th game of the year on November 16th.
On May 28 the Mason Lions Club met in general session at Nachos, and President-elect Michael Murphy spoke about the paradigm changes at Texas A & M University, where Lion Dr. Murphy taught for many years, in recent decades. A&M, originally A&M College was established to help the nation develop the lands on the frontier and to provide education to the rural areas. After World War II the veterans poured into A&M with a clear vision of what they wanted and where they were going.
This past Sunday our Pastor used an illustration in his sermon that I thought was very appropriate to some of the issues we have here in the City, “If the only tool you have in your toolbox is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail.” As we have been considering for the past several years our almost full landfill and thinking of how to deal with our community’s garbage, we have worked toward the permitting to open a new landfill and keep the initial costs down.
The Nature Conservancy appreciates the community’s patience as we’ve worked toward reopening the Eckert James River Bat Cave to visitors. We deeply value the region’s longtime support of this Central Texas treasure and remain dedicated to providing viewings at the cave for Texans to enjoy, now and in the future. Though we are unable to offer a set date for reopening at this time, we hope to be able to offer a number of viewing dates to visitors this season and respectfully ask for you ...

The Mason ISD has been using an app called SchoolWay to send out information to the students, parents and community over the last few years. It has been very helpful for instances such as delayed start due to wether or celebrating a state championship win. SchoolWay is no longer going to be available, but don’t worry, we have a new plan already in place.

Welcome summer. We have missed out on most of the rain at our house. We have also missed out on the hail and wind damage. Corpus Bound,,,, Again! Wednesday morning, about the time you're reading this, I'll be heading out of town for Corpus Christi. I'll be down there through Saturday, and I'm a little excited about the opportunity to get away for a few days. I'm going to be joining Methodist clergy and lay delegates from all over the Rio Texas Conference (a huge area that goes from San Angelo, to Mason, to San Antonio, Ozona and back around.
Trash Disposal We have been homeowners and Mason county and town taxpayers since June, 1991. While we will not likely be able to attend the City Commission meeting on June 17, we would like to express our support for the Commission to continue without interruption their ongoing efforts to provide Mason with its own independent landfill.
Response to Landfill Questions Two weeks ago in this paper’s Commissioner’s Comments Commissioner Sue Pledger put forth the idea that the City consider constructing a Level 5 landfill as opposed to a Level 1. There is a considerable difference in a level 1 andlevel5. Level 1 is a fully owned and operated facility, whereas level 5 is nothing more than a transfer station.
Lemonade Pie Courtesy MyRecipes.com Right about now (first of June) I’m wondering when the truly hot weather will get here. I know it’s out there; just hanging around. So I thought this recipe might be a good one for everyone to have tucked away and ready to go. There are one or two folks here in the Mason area who have sampled this pie, and they agree that it’s winner, even though it isn’t a baked item!
No good deed goes unpunished For the past several months an interesting pair of pictures has been making the social media rounds. One picture shows a woman’s legs in a pair of footie pajamas, and they’re printed to look like snakes, with the snakes’ heads on the woman’s feet. The other picture shows a heavily bandaged foot.
DIY in My Rear View Mirror… Warnings abound concerning the danger of saying “never again.” Most of us are guilty of making false promises on topics such as New Year’s resolutions, diets and exercise. I’m ready, though, to admit past failures, place my right hand on a Bible stack and gaze heavenward for this solemn pledge. Never again will I stumble into muckety-muck traps that heretofore have snared me with tempting DIY (do it yourself) lures.

Howdy, June. Fare thee well, May. Come again some other day. Or year, rather. And there’s the rub. A year. And another year. And another. Each one racing by. Even if we aren’t having fun. So might as well. April. May. June. They live year round as names for girls. January and July too. Although not so much these days. Names go in and out of style. One thing’s for sure. Females have been creatively named for centuries. Some after flowers, gems, and ...
