In June, children found out at the library why Da Da Squirrel loves Little Squirrel and what wide-mouth frogs like to eat, along with what likes to eat wide-mouth frogs! It’s frightening enough to make a wide-mouth frog pretend to have a very tiny mouth! Kids surprised their fathers with personal rock portraits of Dad because “Dads Rock.”  They also made Wide-Mouth Frog puppets complete with a fly to eat. On Monday, July 1, it is all about Independence Day with a patriotic story and ...
Unlike the Scarlet Punchers, those women "of a certain age," who absolutely insist on living life to the fullest, the weather outside is hot! hot! hot! So what makes perfect sense to us, in the alternate world in which we all reside, is that July is the perfect time for a cold-weather holiday.

Welcome Summer. We have had a few hot days. This is most likely a preview of the weather to follow for several months. I am totally comfortable at 70 to 76 degrees. This is not my best time of year. It is often out of my temperature range at night and always out of range during the day.
The public water system of the City of Mason in anticipation of the hot weather to come, and the City Administrator John Palacio are requesting our citizens to observe Voluntary water conservation measures.  While we do not fear immediate water shortages, we feel it is necessary to move to Voluntary measures to protect the water levels for everyone and the demand on our water system.  We have been blessed with much needed rain these last few weeks and as it dries out and the hot summer wind ...

The Earth Is Flat... The Moon Landing Was Fake... Vaccines Aren't Safe.... Many years ago, there were strange rumors and wives tales that trickled through our conversations. The subjects were often quite trivial; but, in our young lives, they were of substantial importance. We all believed the rumor that Bubble Yum bubblegum was so soft and chewy because it was made from spider eggs. We questioned if Paul McCartney was dead, because on the Abbey Road album, he was out of step with his b ...
Landfill A Landfill is not like a Tuxedo I’ve rented a tuxedo twice in my life...prom 1964 and when I got married. What I learned during my 73 years is it makes sense to rent a tux, but not a landfill. Shipping trash 160-mile round trip to rent space in Brownwood’s landfill every time trash is dumped is crazy.
Waste Monday night’s Commissioners meeting was a grass roots example of democracy in action. It was so moving to see our community come together, in a positive way, over a mutual concern. It was apparent that the landfill decision currently under consideration brings out strong feelings. As well it should. The city forefathers were thinking about us, the future generations, when they made certain Mason would have a method in place to address the inevitability of trash. It is understanda ...

Ingredients: 3 cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup sugar 1 cup cornmeal, preferably coarse, but fine will work fine 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ teaspoons salt ...

Over the bounding Visa card Back when I was a little kid, and people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would usually offer the normal, expected kid answers. I would say I wanted to be a fireman or a doctor or the guy who sits in that little room behind the ATM and sticks the money through the slot.
Shutters Closed on Red Light Cameras… Attention drawn to “red light cameras” has a broadened focus in Dallas. Some “Big D” traffic signals--designed to be effective for 25 years--have been in service since 1940, with almost all in use since 1980. If tell-tale cameras had been that old, there’d have been black-hooded photographers straddling elevated supports trying to apply matches to magnesium at precisely the right moment to provide lighting for incriminating photos of lawbr ...

Somewhere it’s five o’clock. And somewhere it’s NOT 90 degrees. Wonder where that is… Possibly the other side of the world. Since it’s Winter in the Southern Hemisphere. June, July, and August. Down under. Australia. New Zealand. In the Andes. Patagonia. Antarctica. Not all of them get snow and ice. Except Antarctica. And that’s year round. Just the thought of it brings relief to the heat. DQ did good creating The Blizzard. Just saying it cools yo ...
