7th grade The seventh grade Punchers played a hard fought game and were able to come out on top with a 30-24 victory over Harper. Our offense was able to move the ball all through the game and were able to capitalize on all of our drives. Defensively, we were good at the point of attack but could finish off tackles and they were able to score and keep the game close all the way to the end. Scoring for the seventh grade were Hunter Bradley on a reception from Cannon Jacoby, 2 rushing touch ...
Last week, the JV football Punchers took on the Tolar Rattlers. It was a tough fought game with the Punchers leading at halftime 16-9. However, in the second half, the Puncher offense couldn’t get any traction, while also giving up two scores. The final was 21-16 in favor of the Rattlers.

Loyal fans of the Mason Punchers could be forgiven for being very confused by the game plan during last Friday's meeting with the Harper Longhorns. Receivers were toting the ball. QB Matt Kerr shot off pass after pass. And, kicker Kyle Montoya got to boot in not one, but two, field goals for the Punchers. Head Coach Michael McLeod knew that Harper is currently going through a growth and rebuilding process, and he knew they've had a rather tough season.

A sharp eyed reader found an error in the listing of Mason County Sheriffs in the history of the Mason County Jail, as published in last week's Hunters' & Visitors' Guide. Francis Kettner was sheriff from May 1861 to August 1862. There is documentation from Stella Gipson Polk’s book, Mason and Mason County: A History that has as a source Kathryn Buford Eilers, B.A and her book A History of Mason County, Texas Thesis Aug.

Ask any veteran deer hunter if they can remember their first hunt and I’m sure it brings back many fond memories. They will remember who they were with, the weather, the anticipation, the excitement of spotting a deer, the joy and relief of a successful shot, or the dismay of an opportunity missed.
November came right on in, whether I was ready or not. I had knee replacement surgery last Tuesday. No, I am not as tough as I thought I was. Daughter Tina is doing great as our nurse for a week or two. I hope she survives. I came home from the hospital on Halloween.
Is ‘Fake’ the New Normal?... We called prized possessions “gen-u-wine” back in the day. That’s not the correct spelling, of course, but when the word fell from our lips, we emphasized each syllable to make sure hearers clearly understood that our claims were 100% true. “Genuine” back then was about as far away from “fake” as the east is from the west.

Thomas “Tommy” Ammon Quick, 85, of Brady, Texas, went peacefully to his Heavenly home on Monday, October 28, 2019, in Brady. Tommy was born in Mount Gainor, Texas, on November 23, 1933, to Oley Quick and Lena Faye Connell. He was a resident of McCulloch County for 60 plus years. Tommy married the love of his life, Wanda McGary, on September 9, 1989, in Brady and they cherished 30 wonderful years together.
Learning to Live Alone As I was typesetting Ron Birk's column this week about losing his dad, it got me to thinking about the loss of my dad back in September. While there is always a period of grieving and adjustment after losing a loved one, I realized that Daddy's loss had affected me in another way I hadn't even anticipated. Near the end of November, I will be turning 60.

I recently had a couple of requests to re-run the “ The Mason Puncher Tavern Burger Recipe” I think that with this being the midst of Fall Football season it brings back memories of those of us that couldn’t wait to get to a “Mason Puncher” home football game to have a “Tavern Burger”.

Chocolate Pecan Pie courtesy: Hershey Just like biscuit and roll recipes, a person cannot have too many pecan pie recipes. Particularly if the person is blessed like we are by living in “Pecan Country!” This recipe has been kicking around the Innis family for years, and with the holiday season fast approaching, I thought I'd share it with you and hope you and your family enjoy the pie as much as we have. Ingredients: 1 ½ cups pecan bits and pieces 1 cup semisweet chocolate chip ...
Cowboys Don't Cry (October 26th marked 40 years since my father's death. These are thoughts I put on paper after that event.) I was raised in a "cowboys don't cry" culture. A real man does not show his emotions. Even though I have come to realize how ridiculous that is, I still have a difficult time showing my emotions.
Change. We court it. We fear it. We anticipate it and ignore it. We are surrounded by change for the simple fact that nothing in life remains the same. Start with the global population. In 1950 there were 2.55 billion people. Today, 69 years later, children of the baby boomer generation are raising families of their own in a world with a growing population of 7.7 billion. Think of all the changes that have happened in 69 years.
People are upset with the cancellation of Kendal Hemphill’s column in the Mason County News. That’s understandable. He has loyal followers and good friends. And he’s an engaging writer. That is, when he sticks to his outdoor humorist topics. Then he’s warm, funny, and worth reading. When he veers off into topics that rile people up, on both sides of our current political divide, it does no service to public civility and discourse.
I commend the Mason County Historical Commission in their tireless efforts to protect and preserve our beautiful county. Our history, heritage, and culture deserve preservation. Each is fragile and can easily disappear in a generation. We must respect what has come before us, preserve what we have inherited, and cherish the memory of our ancestors. Sincerely, Donna Horton Byrd
To the Editor Good grief! Please put Kendall’s column back in! I missed the column that must have created this uproar, I miss a lot of them. If I didn’t like what he wrote, I quit reading. If I liked it I laughed. If it was removed because someone complained over politics, substance, humor, no humor, grumpiness or just because they are mad at the world.
