The 2019 season for the Mason Punchers ended on Friday night as they suffered a 26-0 loss to the powerful Holland Hornets, who will now go on to face Refugio in the next round of the playoffs. Holland set the tone of the game early, scoring twice in the first quarter and putting 13 points up on the board going into the second quarter. Multiple times, the Punchers would press downfield; but, Holland would put forward a strong defense and prevented them from scoring every time. Holland sc ...
Healthcare experts estimate that the number of Texans with diabetes will quadruple over the next three decades due to the aging population and obesity epidemic. A person is diagnosed with diabetes when their body’s ability to respond to the hormone insulin is impaired and therefore results in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates causing an increase in the patient’s blood glucose level.
Shortly after I got my Tesla Model 3, someone asked me (with a snide tone to their voice), “Why would you want to buy an electric car?” I replied that it was saving me $4000 a year in gas, maintenance and repair. It was the end of the discussion. I checked my records for this article and by this time last year I had already spent $2000 on gas.

This past weekend was a great opportunity to celebrate a day of Thanksgiving and then enjoy a start to the Christmas season in small town Texas. I heard several tales of joyful feasts for family and friends and hope that you had a chance to spend time with those you love.

If you happened to catch the elaborately adorned “Matachines” dancers before the Light up Our Town festivities this past weekend then you witnessed one part of our veneration for the Lady of Guadalupe, our blessed Mother Mary. The danza performers are usually the opening ceremony for the veneration followed with a mass.

Now you have my permission to play Christmas music and put up the tree. I get upset when people get off season. November was the month for Thanksgiving. October was Halloween. No Christmas decorations should be in stores or home before December, the month for Christmas. Leave It to a Brassy Blond to Make Things Better! I always hear folks complaining that there’s nothing to watch on television anymore. That, in spite of hundreds of channels on satellite and cable, the thousands of movies and television shows available for streaming and the things that are still put out by the old, reliable network that have been around for decades. We end up watching the same channels, waiting for something better to finally show up in the schedule.
The Way We War (December 7, 1941 - a day that "will live in infamy," and in my memory.) My family escaped the tragedy and suffering of World War II. I was too young to serve in the armed forces. My father was too old. One uncle and a couple of cousins were in the service.

Chilies Rellenos Casserole I thought we might need a little “South of the Border” to get past the rich Thanksgiving dishes. This is a great recipe when you have company coming. You can make this ahead time. I think you could even freeze it. Its one my favorite recipes my sister (Judy Lehmberg) makes.
A Welcome Pause… It is a simple request, embodied in a one-syllable, five-letter word. Yet, it is potentially “punch-packing,” whether perused by an individual, or considered by an entire nation, or even the world. Whoever penned it likely had no clue that its message should be implemented beyond the walls of Chick-fil-A by a world spinning insanely fast, with little thought to abrupt stops that could occur at any moment. Maybe, just maybe, the word on a sign posted before one rea ...
Quick and Easy Bread Sticks courtesy: Sara Hennigan As the name implies, these are quick and easy, and will be consumed by the dozens. They do require a bit of kneading, and they are a bit of a mess to make, but the results are well worth the clean-up! Ingredients: 1 cup of Greek, plain yogurt 1 ½ cups of self rising flour (That’s it, folks; that’s really all there is!) Process: Preheat oven to 500 degrees Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl Dump out onto a wel ...
Ever wondered why we don’t see as many horned toads as when we were kids? You can find out if you come to Jim Gallagher’s program Thursday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 P.M. He works for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area. He’ll be able to explain how the lizard became a threatened species and what, if anything, we can do to help restore this iconic species to the landscape where it belongs.
