Members of Mason Study Club met on Wednesday, November 13th for their regular monthly club meeting. District Attorney, Tonya Ahlschwede, presented a program on CBD oils which is currently popular for aches, pains and medical problems. She explained with a power point presentation that the CBD is a derivative of the hemp plant and is strictly regulated in Texas.
Riata Service Organization’s November 19th meeting was held at the lovely home of Nonie Stringer. We were fascinated by our unique program. Mariana Davis moved to Mason with her poet husband Glover Davis a little over two years ago. She is a native of San Antonio, She received her PhD from the University of North Texas.
Operation Orphans, Inc. held its second hunt of the 2019 “Take a Child Hunting” program Saturday, November 16. The boys from five child residential and one foster home came to Camp Gene Ashby on Friday evening ready to enjoy a couple of days in the Texas hill country. November is DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH, but realistically, in order to save lives and improve the quality of our life for those with diabetes, every month and every day we need to be AWARE and responsible for our health. The World Health Organization released its first global report on diabetes in 2016 and the news was not good, diabetes was unrelenting.
With this being Thanksgiving week, I have been thinking about all that makes me thankful to be able to live and work in the community of Mason. For one thing there is the fact that we truly are rural, we can get to work or the store without having to fight the traffic every day, and when you look up at night you can see a sky full of stars and a clear view of the Milky Way from most anywhere in the area!
Boss Lion Michael Murphy gaveled the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m. at Nacho’s Café on November 19. Lion Michael introduced a friend visiting from South Africa-Chris Mulder. Lion John Palacio was the program chair this week and he introduced Greg Adams who was going to talk about the new landfill. Greg works for Biggs & Mathews, the firm that will be installing the new landfill.
Friday night's area playoff game against Weimer down in Dripping Springs began with the Punchers kicking off to the Wildcats. That was immediately followed by a Mason interception by Klay Klaerner, setting the tone for the game that would follow. Alpha Beta Psi will be hosting its annual Light Up Our Town Saturday, November 30th 4:00 – 6:00 p.m! The Heart of Texas New Years Celebration will be held on Monday, December 30 and Tuesday, December 31, at the new Brady Civic Center in Brad, Texas. Tickets for the dances are now on sale at www.heartoftexascountry.com or by calling (325) 597-1895. On Monday, December 30, Johnny Bush and The Bandoleros will headline the dance at the Brady Civic Center. Johnny Bush began his musical career in Houston.
Hunger is real for some Mason County children and families. Beginning December 2, 2019, the Mason County Ministerial Alliance Food Bank will collect food in the lobbies of the Mason Bank, Bancorp South and Commercial Bank. Food will be distributed to families beginning December 9, 2019. The food bank is open the second Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. Items especially needed include macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, canned tomato products and canned fruit and vegetables.
Mason has an increasing feral cat problem. This picture was taken in one location in Mason. Word in the community there is a woman by the name of Eleanor, who lives in the county. She drives into our town, purchases a large quantity of cat food at Dollar General and then drives around town pouring cat food out of her truck.
If you’ve had the happenchance to be in your home on a fall afternoon and heard some drums beating from downtown Mason, you are not hearing the Mighty Mason Puncher Band. It will most likely be the drums beating from the DANZA AZTECA TONANTZIN, the matachines (ma-ta-chee-nes) procession. The matachines are a dance troupe that adorns themselves in brightly colored ritual attire called bouffon.

The Art United Methodist Church was decorated for the season Sunday morning. The hanging of the greens is a great time for members to get together and spruce up the church.
Have ya’ll seen the new Anna Martin exhibit? So far this month, visitors from Iowa, Oklahoma, California, Virginia, Colorado—in addition to sixteen Texas towns and cities—have learned that Mason is the home of the first woman bank founder and president in the U.S. Even visitors from Japan now know Anna Martin’s story!
Stanley Henrich of Mason, Texas passed away on November 19, 2019, at the age of 70 after a long, hard fought battle with cancer.  He was born on March 6, 1949, to Leroy and Lois Edna (Henke) Henrich in Fredericksburg, Texas.  Stanley grew up in Mason, graduating from Mason High School, and Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, Texas. Stanley married Mary Jane Crenwelge on June 27, 1986, in San Antonio, Texas.
Melissa Ann Estes, 36, of Houston, passed away peacefully November 21, 2019, in Mason, Texas. She was born in Houston, Texas, on October 26th 1983, to John and Lynda Scoblick. She was a 2002 graduate of Klein Forest High School. She married Brock Estes of Mason, Texas on October 16th 2010. She worked as a counselor for a couple different companies, and then started her own practice.

Free Speech I feel the need to speak up in regards to the cancellation of Kendall Hemphill's column. I'm neither a liberal nor a conservative, so I feel as though I can speak to the issue with a fresh perspective.
