The coronavirus pandemic has laid much of the American economy on its back — but a bright spot made the disaster less crippling than it might have been. That is the Paycheck Protection Program, which funneled money to workers through small businesses.
More than five million small businesses took the PPP loans, representing 50 million jobs, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Congress in June.

On the first day with her foster family, she explored her new surroundings and basked in the sun. On the second day, she tolerated a hose bath, but LOVED being towel dried.

I finally can begin the countdown. One month remains before I leave and I'm getting a bit more sentimental with each passing day.
One of the things that I've enjoyed about this position over 22 years is the smorgasbord of folks I've been honored to work with in the various roles I've had with them over the years.
Thanksgiving Day will be the 267th day of my self-isolation to protect myself from the Corona virus. (Mar. 5th - I started as soon as I realized that this virus is both airborne and deadly to some of us.) I miss my children and my grandchildren and my friends, but I can still breathe.
Last week, we proudly announced that McKenzie Cano had signed with University of Mary Hardin Baylor to play basketball. Unfortunately, I had a temporary brain.... pause, and misspelled her name. My apologies and congratulations once more. Pictured, left to right: Elizabeth, McKenzie, Madison and Denis Cano.
Hope for a COVID-19 vaccine is becoming a reality and plans for distribution are progressing. Clinical trials on two vaccines have demonstrated over 90% effectiveness in prevention of COVID-19 infections. An effectiveness of 90% means at least 9 out of 10 people who receive a vaccine will likely not contract COVID-19.
During the 36 years lived in San Marcos, we were subscribers to the Austin American-Statesman. For 20 of those years, I looked forward to the weekly columns of Browning Ware, Pastor of Austin's First Baptist Church.
After his death, a collection of those writings was published in a book, Diary of a Modern Pilgrim.
I’ve made beer bread for years, and I have always used a recipe that called for “no kneading;” just whip up the batter in a bowl, pour it into a baking dish, and let ‘er rip. This is a bit more work to make the loaf, but the resulting product is terrific, and the loaf of bread is a bit larger than the traditional recipe produces.
Ingredients:
1 ½ teaspoons of dry yeast
4 ½ cups all-purpose flour, divided
½ cup warm water (100 degrees)
1 can or bottle of beer of your choic ...
It is tempting--ever so tempting--to claim authorship of the headline introducing a column written a dozen years ago.
To make such a claim, however, wouldn’t set well with my conscience, even if no libel charges took me to task.
The account detailed travails of a then 15-year-old Alabama girl who lost a leg to a cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2000, then the other to the same disease in 2007.
With Thanksgiving around the corner and everyone getting back in the groove of school or just a hectic fall schedule, I started going through my crockpot recipes. I don’t have very many that call for turkey so I thought this would be something good for a change. I usually serve with a pasta salad.
Happy Thanksgiving. This will be a different time for many families. The Covid virus has kept many families at home not wanting to be exposed to the virus or possible exposing family to the virus. We will have a small gathering. We would love to see more of our family but we will have a phone visit instead.
Please keep the Mason Ministerial Alliance in mind when helping others this season.
Just a note to let everyone know that our Veterans hunt will continue for the twenty fifth year on the weekend of January 15. This year though, we are looking at several changes.
First of all, we are inviting only thirty five hunters. Last year we had seventy five.
To be granted use of the Community Building, we must limit occupancy to a total of seventy five.

The suggestion for this week’s column came from my friend and ranch neighbor, Hal Zesch. The Zesch family is one of the original German families that settled Mason County in the mid-1800s. The Zesches are known throughout the county for their stewardship of their family ranches, which have been protected, managed, enjoyed, and passed down through many generations.
