For the past fourteen years the Mason Community Foundation has operated its Thrift Store with the goal of using all of the profits to provide funding for the many non-profit organizations in the community. With the very recent devastation and destruction of the beloved Courthouse, the Board of the Foundation unanimously decided to provide immediate funding of $20,000 for the “Rebuild the Courthouse” project.

With an event like last week’s fire of Mason County Courthouse and so many other things trying to tear away at the fabric of community, I believe we should look to the Lord and his word to give us comfort, strength, and direction. In our day to day lives we are drawn or pushed closer to a need of a relationship with God and his healing, guidance, and hope. In an article written by Andy Crouch for Christianity Today he stated, “there is no need for elaborate explanations to bring a dista ...
I am having some trouble with the column this week. Our community has suffered a gut wrenching event with the loss of our courthouse. We are all affected by this. And the crime spree threatened other landmarks and burned a home. My mother always told me that if I couldn’t say anything nice, be quiet.
Mom’s Strawberry Cake
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner it makes me think of my mom’s Strawberry Cake. I always knew that I would have a Red Velvet cake for my birthday and a Strawberry Cake for Valentine’s Day. My mom would make her strawberry cake and a homemade valentine, complete with doilies and a poem for Valentine’s Day.
Clydesdales Miss Big Game….
Folks who regularly lump alcoholic beverages into the cauldron labeled “witches’ brew” may still be shaking their heads, wondering why Anheuser-Busch didn’t get their famous Clydesdales in harness for Super Bowl LV. The brewery moguls say they’re skipping major SB ads for the first time in 37 years so funds can be diverted to further increase COVID-19 vaccine awareness.
That’s right folks, there is STILL no place like Mason! Yes, we have suffered a profound loss to our community and heritage, but what makes Mason special remains unchanged. Even though our physical beauty has been marred for the time being, the heart of this community…its people…are resilient and we will grow stronger as we come together to rebuild. Although this rebuilding process will be more like a marathon than a sprint, during this time we will continue to live our lives the Maso ...

Following the Bouncing Ball
Over the years I have dabbled in various sports — football, softball, volleyball, and golf. But the one that was always my favorite as a player was basketball. I took up the game in my early childhood when one Christmas I received a basket ball and hoop. The only place I had/put the hoop was on the side of the barn.

The Unexpected Beauty and Diversity of Lichens
The dramatic granite and gneiss outcrops of Mason County are often covered with colorful lichens, as are most of our trees. This is great sign of our clean air, as lichens are very sensitive to air pollution. If you drive from Mason to one of the large cities to our east, such as Austin or San Antonio, stop and look at the oak trees along your journey.
Consider All of the Costs of Buying a Home
Purchase price is important, but it is not the only factor when buying a home. Consider the following “costs” when choosing a place to live. Cost of Travel Your home is your starting point for everywhere you go. How much time does it take to get to work? Where is the nearest grocery store?
