After around 6 months of construction work, the Mason County Food Bank is getting ready to operate out of its renovated facility next month. With last season’s youth baseball season sidelined due to Covid precautions; Mason’s youngsters; ages ranging from 5 to 14 are enjoying their opportunity this season to get out on the diamond and have some fun. Mason’s season begins in March and ends in May coinciding with the summer break from school.
The cast and crew of SILENT SKY, Mason’s One Act Play 2021 entry, won Bi-district and are now preparing for Region in Corpus Christi on Tuesday, April 13. Students took home some impressive honors at Bi-district at Tivy HS on March 19. In rare fashion, Will Ince and Hannah Bishop were BOTH awarded Top Performers (formerly Best Actor and Best Actress), Abbey Wallace was All Star Cast while Linden Chapman and Lauren Olson won Honorable Mention All Star Cast.

The Mason High School boys and girls varsity track and field teams recently competed in the annual Armadillo Relays on Thursday, March 25 at San Saba High School. Miguel (Mike) J. Arteaga of Mason, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the age of 67, surrounded by his family. Mike will be remembered as a soft spoken man full of love and devotion. Mike was born in Los Rodriguez, Guanajuato, Mexico in 1953. His family moved to the United States where his parents settled in Fredonia, TX in 1962.

Beef and Vegetable Stuffed Peppers
With spring showers bring April flowers (and vegetables). I don’t know about you, but I am ready for some warm weather. I hope the freezes haven’t gotten all of the flowers and vegetables. The southeast side of the shed provided shelter from the cool northwest wind. The early morning sun reflected off the tin siding warming our backs as we leaned against it waiting for the other shearers to arrive. Ernest and I were engaged in our semi-annual conver­sation, catching up on what had happened in each other's lives since the last shearing.
What to plant in March through April? Beans, snap, lima, cantaloupe, swiss chard, collards seeds or transplants, cucumber, eggplant, “cool season” greens to name a few. Okra first of April, mustard till end of March, April peas English and snap through July. Also, pepper transplants now through May, sweet potato slips now through the end of June.
We are celebrating Holy Week this week. The Art Methodist Church will have a Good Friday Service April 2 at 5 pm at the cross. Easter Sunrise Service will be under the tabernacle at 7 am on April 4. There will be a light breakfast following the service. There will not be an Easter Egg Hunt this year for the children.
