Mason voters elected two new city commissioners on Saturday, but neither are new to town and both are eager to get started.
Melanie Eckert will represent District 2 and Paul Smith was elected by a margin of less than 5 votes to the District 4 seat.
Eckert won the election with 26 votes over Nicholas Garish who had 6 votes, according to unofficial results released on Saturday.
The local man accused of setting fire to the Mason County Courthouse is in a county jail closer to home after being in custody in McLennan and Williamson counties for the past three months.
On April 28, Nicholas Jarret Miller, 42, was booked into the McCulloch County Jail, where he was being held for Mason County on bonds totaling $1.7 million on four felony charges.
Police said that he set the historic courthouse on fire on the night of Feb.
Despite a long absence due to the pandemic, Mason residents are eagerly awaiting the re-opening of their beloved Odeon Theater. With so much chatter on social media repeatedly asking “when?”, it has been announced that the theater will reopen in June 2021. During last month’s board meeting and after careful consultation with local healthcare, county and city officials; it was decided that it was time to open the doors once again for performing arts and cinema.

The first Mason County Farmer’s Market launched Saturday, April 29th despite ongoing rain in the area. However, the market was offered a respite from the weather and opened at 5:00 P.M. to welcoming shoppers. Visitors of all ages undeterred by the threat of rain; filled the West sidewalk of the square; some bedecked in rain gear, were happy to see their friends and neighbors, while checking out the booths.
The Mason One Act Play company performed at the State UIL OAP Contest on April 28 in Seguin. After the eighth and final show, the group was treated to a glorious awards banquet, compliments of supportive, loving parents and friends. The space was graciously provided by the County Extension Service office in Guadalupe County where Merlina Gamel's sister, Charla Bading, is an agent.

The Mason High School varsity baseball team looks to be headed into the postseason on a very high note as the Punchers picked up wins at home vs. Center Point High School and on the road against Junction High School.

On April 28 in the annual Senior Night game at home for Mason, the Punchers went blow-for-blow with a scrappy Pirates team for a majority of the game before Mason pulled away late to beat Center Point 17-7.
The Mason High School varsity softball team had its superb 2021 season come to an end in the 2A bi-district playoffs on Friday, April 30 as the Cowgirls were edged 7-6 by Bremond High School in a back-and-forth contest.
The Cowgirls got on the board in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice bunt by outfielder Aunnecy Elliott that scored fellow outfielder Kamryn Loeffler from third base to make it 1-0 early.
It was a windy few days in Corpus Christi during the Region IV tennis tournament last week, but the Punchers and Cowgirls prevailed to win 1st and 2nd in four of the five divisions and will represent Region IV in 14 of the 16 available spots at the State tennis tournament in San Antonio on May 20-21.

I received a phone message yesterday that asked, “When are my onions ripe and when and how do I harvest and store them?” Let’s look at onions, garlic, potatoes, and winter squash for harvesting and “curing”.
Onions can take their time to grow, especially with the up and down weather we have experienced this spring.
Last month, I was watching a herd of deer gathered around a feeding station where feed had apparently just been dispersed (a practice I don’t recommend). Then all of a sudden, the entire herd bounded off in one direction, tail flags up, clearly having been spooked by something. Then a few seconds later I saw a lone coyote trotting up from the opposite direction.
One thing that was always a constant at Lutheran Brunches was the Lutheran Breakfast quiche. Whether it was the Easter morning service or the Graduation service it was always served with blue berry muffins, fruit salad and usually some sausage balls. The quiche was usually one of the favorites, of everyone.
The Practical Baker really enjoys experimenting in the kitchen. From taking tried and true recipes and altering them in different ways, to sometimes striking out and attempting to build something from scratch, I get a lot of pleasure in seeing how many different ways I can make a baked good!

A common phrase today is ‘not all heroes wear capes.’ You see it used with stories about regular people doing brave or noteworthy things, but it’s mostly meant as a joke. For instance, I saw it used with a story about Ander Christensen, a Nebraska fellow who petitioned his local city council to advocate that people stop calling chicken wings ‘boneless.’ And to be fair, the guy was right.
