After a grand jury handed down five felony indictments against a man accused of setting fire to the Mason County Courthouse in February, the county will have to set aside hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for expenses related to the jury trial against him. Nicholas Jarret Miller, 42, was booked into the McCulloch County Jail on April 28, where he was being held on Tuesday for Mason County on bonds totaling $1.7 million.
Mason’s 56th Annual Rodeo is just a few days away from its much-anticipated re-introduction after last year’s delay due to health restrictions. However, nothing is slowing down the momentum and growing excitement for this year’s event. Kicking off the rodeo will be a colorful entry-filled parade and then it’s on to the Ft.
The Mason High School varsity baseball team had one player and its head coach honored late last month for their superb efforts during the 2021 season that saw the Punchers advance all the way to the 2A regional semifinals of the playoffs. For the 2021 All-West Texas Baseball Team compiled by the San Angelo Standard-Times, the Punchers were well represented by the duo of senior pitcher Colby Brown and Mason head coach Jay Immel. Brown, who was the very reliable senior ace on the mound thro ...

Ways to Attract and Increase Bird Populations
A recent comprehensive study of North American bird populations found a drop of nearly 3 billion U.S. and Canadian birds over the past 50 years. That represents a 30% decline in our native bird populations. The drop in birds that live and breed in grasslands has been even greater, with a decline in populations of more than half.
The Joy of Watching Nature
As I sit at my computer writing this, I can look past my monitor and watch the queen butterflies literally flocking to the blooms on Gregg’s mistflower, or the hummingbirds probing each tiny bloom on the prairie larkspur, both of which are growing just off the porch only a few feet from where I sit.

This is harvest season. We plan and carefully prepare our gardens, plant and tend to seeds, spend our days watering and fertilizing, anxiously keep an eye on the clouds and the weather, but the outcome of our harvest is always a question. But we always hope the answer is a good one. This year is a bumper harvest for tomatoes, pepper, and cucumber.

Preacher, You Might Be In Trouble If... … the congregation votes to put a clock on the back wall of the church. … the notes in the pulpit are for last Sunday's sermon. … someone has replaced the pulpit Bible with a copy of “The Quick And Easy Way To Effective Speaking.” … church attendace rises dramatically – while you're on vacation! … while nervously waiting to enter the church for your first sermon there, an usher attempts to comfort you by whispering, “Don't ...
Tender Biscuits for Two Courtesy: Anne Burke
While I am presenting the original recipe, just as I found it, I want to hasten to assure everyone that when I actually got around to making it, I corrupted it terribly! Every place Ms. Burke called for “reduced fat,” or “fat-free” ingredients, I substituted “regular,” high octane, full fat products.
We have had a break in the hot weather. Temperatures in the 80s are much nicer than over 100. The city says we can’t water until they get the new water radon system working. A break in the heat has been helpful. I usually plant a garden. For several years I have had little success with harvesting anything.
Let There be an Inferno
One of Jimmy Stewart’s most popular movies is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ the story of George Bailey and his dream of being on television every Christmas season forever. At one point in the movie George says the three most exciting sounds in the world are train whistles, airplane engines, and anchor chains.
