Hundreds of people already have donated tens of thousands of dollars to be used toward rebuilding the historic Mason County Courthouse, which was destroyed by an alleged arsonist earlier this year, but the monumental fundraising effort is just beginning. “I’ll always remember how proud I felt of our courthouse, of how beautiful it was,” said Bobbie McMillan, president of Friends of the Mason County Courthouse board of directors. It will cost an estimated $19.6 million to rebuild the ...

Animal Society is Varied, Complex and Mysterious
Most of us are fascinated by watching animal behavior, especially their interactions with their own species. It is these intra-species interactions and associations that we call, anthropomorphically, “animal societies.” To start with the basics, some animals are loners and some like to be part of a group. Some groups are small and some are huge.

It has been a chilly Thanksgiving. The up and down temperatures create a challenging fall going into the winter gardening season. The hoop house is holding its own, and the raised beds are partially covered with frost cloth and burlap. All the cold-tolerant plants, kale, collards, cabbage, and carrots are just setting tight.
I Get My Kicks on 386
Those of us of a certain generation remember a widely popular song of the past containing the catchy lyrics, “I get my kicks on Route 66.” The reference was to one of the first major cross country highways that ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. The song was a musical journey from location to location along the legendary route.
Thanksgiving was wonderful. We celebrated in shifts since not everyone was able to come at the same time. We had turkey one meal and ham the second meal. The turkey leftovers were packaged in dinners for Tina to share at the nursing home where she works. It was a win-win for all.
The Gun that Won the Woods
Open just about any gun cabinet in the country and you’re likely to find a model 1894 Winchester lever-action rifle chambered in .30-30 Winchester. It will probably be off to one side, half forgotten, with a thin layer of dust, and a history of mild abuse written in scratches, dings, and faded bluing.
