With 2021 ending soon, the Mason County News decided to take a look back at 2021 in the City of Mason and a peek toward planned city projects for 2022. Looking back at some 2021 highlights “Some of these projects began before 2021, but progress on the HMO (Hydrous Manganese Oxide filtration) system is one of the highlights of this year,” said City Administrator, John Palacio, on Tuesday.
Fentapills. Have you ever heard of these? They are the millions of fake prescription pills that have flooded the market since about 2014. Drug dealers are business people, and they follow the money. As long as there is a demand for Xanax, Oxycodone, Percocet and the like, they will find the easiest, most profitable way to supply them.
Mason High School girls varsity cross country had a runner recently recognized as junior standout Kinsley Jordan was selected as a Texas Girls Coaches Association cross country all-star. On December 13, the Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library will be switching e-book providers. Bees and Butterflies and Blooms in Winter?
Readers: This column was originally run several years ago. I am running a revised version now, even though it is not yet even the beginning of winter, to alert everyone to be on the lookout for activity on warm days, even in the winter. Just outside our window we planted an Elbow Bush 10 or 12 years ago.
Our switch in e-book providers will happen next week on December 13. Be sure to delete Overdrive and Libby and download cloudLibrary (Bibliotheca). The app will be active for our patrons on Monday and your login information will be the same as it was for Overdrive. There is access to 14 times as many ebooks and audiobooks!
Cinnamon Swirl Bread for the Bread Machine Courtesy: AllRecipes.com
Somewhat like chocolate goodies, I've not met a cinnamon pastry that I've not liked. It's one of my many weaknesses, and the fact that you can let the bread machine do all the heavy lifting makes it even more attractive. (If you don't have a bread machine, you can always do the mixing the old fashioned way.
Charlie’s Tales
On November 30 the Mason Lions Club met for their weekly club meeting at Nacho’s. Lion Mark Nash introduced Hal Zesch as his guest; guests are always welcome. It was the turn of Lion Charlie Reichenau to provide a speaker, and he chose himself, to the delight of the assembled pride of Lions. Lion Charlie has an abundance of stories, and they come forth like a flowing spring.
What’s a Nice God Like You Doing in a Place Like This?
Cleaning out water troughs is one of the many unsavory chores of ranching. Leaves fall. Algae grows. Livestock litter. The result is a build-up of muck on the bottom of these animal drinking containers that periodically needs to be removed. The way this muddy mire is moved, at least on the Birk ranch, is to wait until one of those times when the troughs have been drunk dry.
The countdown is on for Christmas. I am a bit behind on decorations. John had knee surgery this week and the week was sometimes very slow moving and then it was way too fast. I am home again. John is in a rehabilitation hospital and is not the happiest of people.
Gourds! This plant has been used by humans for as long as we can remember. If you need a bowl, water cup, scoop, or container, this sturdy member of the large Cucurbitaceae family has 100 genera and 1,000 species that produce a hard-shell, durable fruit. The two main characteristics of this family are having a tendril-bearing vine with both male and female blossoms borne on the same vine and producing a fruit that has an outer-shell covering (may be soft or hard), with seeds embedded in a pul ...
