Mason County has been honored to be the site of several Former Texas Ranger Cross Ceremonies through the years. Without these gutsy, determined men, we would have been vastly unprotected across Texas, and in particular in Mason County and surrounding areas. The “Settlement Line” into the 1860s and ‘70s did not extend this far west, meaning that we were not well enough inhabited or armed to fend off the renegades of any kind who plundered and kidnapped and killed.
Aspen Martin, 14, of Mason, Texas, had tears of joy streaming down her face as her Charolais steer, Amos Moses, was awarded the Grand Champion slap from the judges. Earlier in the week, Aspen, a member of Mason Co. 4-H, exhibited the Grand Champion Junior Market Goat; however, she said this victory was a little bit sweeter. “I have dreamed about this,” Aspen said.
Magical Mason is popping with color in more ways than one! Mother Nature is working her magic on the hills and in the valleys, while talented artists are planning displays for their creations during Mason Bloomin’ Arts Fest on Saturday, April 2nd. From 11am-4pm a whole host of artists will be lining the sidewalks with their creations. For local artist, Karen Sharbo, (featured at the Arnold Art Gallery), color and creativity have always been a part of her life.
Buddy’s Animal Rescue began with Buddy, a loyal rescue dog. The rescued Beagle’s remarkable true story of riding an ambulance to be with his new owner spawned international news coverage and helped found Buddy’s Animal Rescue. Buddy’s Rescue (B.A.R.) started with a group of dedicated volunteers with a vision to help facilitate the powerful relationship between humans and at-risk animals.
BRYAN, Texas – This month, Capital Farm Credit (CFC) is returning $56.7 million in cash to its member customers in the form of patronage dividends. “Our patronage dividend program is what sets us apart from other lenders,” said Ben Novosad, CFC’s chief executive officer. “Since 2007, we have returned more than half a billion dollars to our member borrowers through our patronage dividend program.

Texas—A Whole Other Country. The Lone Star State. So named because it’s a former independent republic. Unlike any other state. Six flags have flown over these 268,820 square miles. Spain. France. Mexico. Republic of Texas. United States of America. Then Texas seceded. And flew the Confederate States of America flag for five years. Then Texas was readmitted to the Union in 1865. And Old Glory has flown ever since. Along with the Lone Star flag. Many prefer to secede again. We’d probably su ...
Happy Easter. I hope you and your family have a blessed holiday with lots of family visits, good food, Easter Eggs, and praise and worship. Come join the Art United Methodist Church on Sunday for a sunrise service at 7 a.m. This is followed by a light breakfast. The Easter Egg hunt is at 10:30.
The anticipation of many may be that I will spend this column justifying the need for a City Police Department, and although I still have serious thoughts in that direction, after last week’s City Commission meeting I expect to wait another week or more to be able to cover the issue thoroughly and with good information.
Free Crosses on Church Street... Odds are, Shrimp Boat Manny’s, on Church Street in Livingston, TX, may be the ultimate oxymoron. Where else, pray tell, can diners scarf down delicious Cajun food whipped up from Southern Louisiana recipes that owners Manny and Nancy Rachal have featured since 1985... then, pick up free crosses on the way out? The intent is for the sealed cedar crosses--weighing 2.6 pounds each, 42 inches tall and 33 inches across--to be posted in yards or wherever.
