The August 8 meeting of the governing body of Blanco began with Mayor Martha Herden introducing Clay Rosenbaum, the new superintendent of the Blanco Independent School District. The Lady Panther volleyball team started their season with a win in five sets over the San Antonio Christian School Lady Lions on Tuesday, August 8. In a match played in the SACS gym, set scores were 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 14-25,15-9. Senior Kendall Brock fired in ten kills to lead the Panthers.
The first day of school is fast approaching, Tuesday, August 29. There are children in the Blanco school district, who for several reasons, will start school without their needed supplies. Here is your chance to help your community grow with pride. On Saturday, August 19, The Blanco Lions Club will sponsor “Stuff the Bus” from 9am-2pm This a community wide effort to help those kids in need of school supplies.
Jim Stanley, Texas Master Naturalist and author, has published his third book, Hill Country Ecology: Essays on Plants, Animals, Water and Land Management. For the last 7 years Stanley has written the Hill Country Naturalist column for the Kerrville Daily Times, and for the last 10 months. For this book, he has selected a little over 200 of the 350 or so columns, collected them into 8 major sections and 25 subsections by topic, and edited a few as necessary.
Texas Tech University is holding a Red Raider Hill Country Orientation on Tuesday, Aug 22, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., for any TTU students attending classes in the Hill Country this fall. August is the month to plant late fall vegetables and prepare for garden soil. Remove old plants and weeds. Add a healthy amount of compost to your garden and flower beds. You may prepare the planting areas several days before planting. Just add a small amount of fertilizer in the bottom of each hole.

William Wilberforce lived in England more than two centuries ago and the consuming passion of his life was to end the slave trade in the British Empire, but most saw him as one of the most unlikely persons of that painful period to do so. While serving as Director of Fine Arts for a school district, I had the opportunity to accompany students to various art galleries and art museums, many of which featured the works of internationally renowned artists.
