On July 2, 2018 the Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 2 broke ground for its new facility located at the corner of Blanco Ave. and Jones Rd. Right now, construction is at the excavation and dirt-working stage. The excavation stage in construction is defined as the process of moving earth, rock or other materials with tools or equipment.
Blanco Police officers responded to support the County Sheriff’s Office on a call in Monday, July 16, 2018, reporting that a convicted felon allegedly possessed narcotics, weapons and a potential explosive device. Officers arrived at the scene in the Lake of the Hills subdivision south of Blanco. BPD officers noted two vehicles leaving the area, including the suspect, and made a traffic stop on both vehicles on U.S.
The Blanco City Council meeting was called to order Tuesday July 10, 2018 by Mayor Martha Herden. After roll call Mayor Herden asked for any public comments. Jan Roe, the public relations director of the Kologik Company, spoke on her company buying part of the COPSync technology as the company filed bankruptcy in September 2017. “I am here to address your concerns about the bankruptcy of COPSync and the viability of the COPSync technology,” Roe said.
Three Hundred Years
On May 1, 1718 the Alamo was founded as a mission named San Antonio de Valero. Days later, San Antonio de Bejar, a presidio, was established to protect the new mission, according to the Texas State Historical Association, in a new publication celebrating San Antonio’s “300 Years of History.” In her 300-year history, the city has endured tremendous loss and great victories, always moving forward to become the great city she is today.
As a result of new tariffs imposed specifically on newsprint, the cost of newsprint has increased significantly. Our printers are passing along these costs to the paper, and we must ask the readership to share in the costs. As a result, effective Aug. 15, 2018, the price of a single copy of the paper will increase to $1 from $0.75. The last time the cost of a single copy of the Blanco County News was raised was in 2006, when the price went from $0.50 to the current rate of $0.75.
Governor Welcomes Establishment of Futures Command in Austin The U.S. Army on July 12 announced its new Futures Command would be headquartered in Austin, “to better partner with academia, industry and innovators in the private sector, while providing a good and affordable quality of life for Futures Command personnel.” “This sweeping reorganization of the Army’s military efforts adds to the historic connection between Texas and the U.S.

More Texans are working than ever before as the Lone Star State leads in private-sector job creation — over the month, over the year and over the past 10 years. And jobs in Texas are now on pace for the strongest growth in four years. This is not accidental.
The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office received 378 calls for service from 7/9/2018 through 7/15/2018. The County Commissioners held a Regular Meeting on July 10. Blanco County Judge Brett Bray called the meeting to order and all four commissioners were present. Regular Agenda Items The Commissioners approved the minutes of the previous three meetings after a motion and second from Commissioner James Sultemeier and Commissioner Tommy Weir.
A treasured friend told me today that I’ve left my handprint upon her heart. She quoted a line from a song she heard on the way to SWEAT with me, and said it spoke to her of me. Of course, I felt a welling of emotion. She’s left her handprint upon mine, too.
On a December night in 1982 Larry Echo Hawk and his wife, Terry, were awakened by the ringing of the telephone. When Larry answered, all he heard was sobbing. Finally, his sister’s struggling voice said, “Tommy is dead.” A 20-year-old drunk driver, speeding at more than 85 mph, recklessly ran a stoplight crashing into the car driven by his youngest brother, Tommy, instantly killing him and his wife, Joan.
At the 100th State Convention of the American Legion of Texas in San Antonio last week, Ted Weeks, a member of Blanco’s American Legion Memorial Highway Post 352, was installed as the Legion’s Third Division Commander. As one of only four division commanders in the state, Weeks oversees the activities of more than 150 American Legion posts in an area that stretches from Houston to Austin and extends into much of Central and South Texas all the way to the border.
Former BHS Football Coach C.D. Kirchner, who served as head coach of the Blanco High School Panthers during the 1966 and 1967 seasons, passed away June 30, 2018. Obituary on page 3. Coach Kirchner was first introduced to parents, players and community members at the BHS Quarterback Club Friday, July 15, 1966, according to the Blanco County News.

Well known and dearly loved Margaret Maxine Blackburn, age 93, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2018, in Johnson City, Texas, at LBJ Medical Center, surrounded by family and loved ones. Maxine was born Sept. 14, 1924 to Newton Macdonald (Mac) Griffin and Dolly (Mama Dolly) Cotton Griffin in Wilson County, Texas.

Curtis Duane Kirchner, age 78, passed away on June 30, 2018 in Cedar Park, Texas, due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. C.D. was a longtime coach and high school administrator. His love for football started while he was a student athlete in Eagle Pass, Texas, where he was member of the class of 1957.

Someone asked me the other day if our current lack of rainfall is as bad now as it was in the drought of 2011. I looked up our rainfall records at our house and found that we have had more than twice as much rain in the first half of 2018 as we did in 2011, and even if I look at the total rainfall for the nine months preceding the end of June in 2018 compared to 2011, again we have had more than twice as much rain this year than in 2011.
