It was high noon. The sun was bright, and the air was crisp. There was a group of men gathered at the saloon. They were a dangerous-looking bunch. Were they looking for the sheriff? No, it was Pine Moore Days hosting the World Championship Mounted Knife and Tomahawk Throw. This year’s event was titled the Good, the Bad, and the Aces.
Eddy Rogers didn’t start out to write a series of books, but now he has. The Blanco man had his first book published in 2016, and he’s continued the prolific pace since. Rogers recently finished his fourth book, The Assassination, and it’s been published. The book is on sale locally at the Old Blanco County Courthouse, and proceeds from sales there go to the courthouse renovation. For the final installment for Ghosts of Blanco, I saved the crown jewel, the Old Blanco Courthouse. They finished building the courthouse in 1886. It served as the Blanco County Courthouse until 1890. The Old Courthouse went through the hands of many owners. So besides being a courthouse, it has served as a school, newspaper plant, pool hall, offices, theater, skating rink, home of the Farmers Union, and a hospital. If those walls could talk…or perhaps they do.
Blanco County Commissioners held a special meeting on Oct. 22. All commissioners were present. Carrie L. First Baptist Church was constituted on Sunday, Nov. 6, 1859, with five members. Rev. Bird was the first pastor, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sillman, formerly of Pittsburgh, assisted to organize. From 1859 to 1902, the Baptist met at the Union Church with the congregations of the Methodist and Church of Christ.

The Adopt-a-Highway program is “a Texas-born program that allows volunteers to adopt stretches of state-maintained roadway to conduct litter pickups” that began in 1985.
There is a grand history to Austin’s lakes which traces back to the late 1930’s, when a nation and state struggling to pull itself out of the Great Depression enacted public infrastructure construction programs to build dams and extend electricity to rural areas. The Lady Panther volleyball team defeated Austin Achieve 3-0 Tuesday, Oct. 22 and beat Florence 3-0 Friday, Oct. 25 to improve to 25-14 overall and 13-1 in District 25-3A. Sets scores against Austin Achieve were 25-6, 25-5, 25-3. Presley Young paced the team with seven kills. Kora Brock, Olivia Atchley and Emilee LaRue each hit four kills.
The Blanco girls cross country team competed at the Region IV Cross Country Meet at Texas A & M Corpus Christi Monday, Oct. 28. The team placed 22nd. With only one senior runner, the team is young with five sophomores and one freshman, so they could be back at the regional meet next year. Yoakum won the Conference 3A division, followed by Lago Vista in 2nd, San Antonio Cole in 3rd and San Diego in 4th.
The Blanco Panthers traveled north on a very chilly evening to face the Brady Bulldogs for another District 13-3A game Friday night, Oct. 25. The Panthers fell to the Bulldogs, 28-21. The Panthers kicked off to start the game as Baylor Smith and Kody Kohnen raced down the field for a quick stop preventing any possibly of a return. The Panther band advanced to the UIL Area E Marching Context at Beeville High School Saturday, Oct. 26. The band qualified for Area by receiving Division I ratings at the UIL Region 12 Marching Contest in San Antonio Saturday, Oct. 19. The band marched in the preliminary round at Area at 2:15 p.m., with the last band marching at 5 p.m.
Violet A. Waters passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 at the LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City after many years of loving care. Violet was born on July 21, 1930 to Clifford and Alberta Haynes in Round Mountain, Texas. She was very proud of her Haynes family history and the times spent on the ranch near Walnut Creek with sisters, Hazel Gatliff, and Alice Schnelle and her brother, George Haynes. Lynn Edward Hicks, beloved husband, Dad, Papaw, Uncle and friend went to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019at the age of 74. Lynn was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Lynn Sr. and Goldie Hicks on Oct. 31, 1944. He was the youngest of five children and left home at the age of 17 to join the Marine Corps.
