Blanco County COVID-19 cases are mirroring trends seen recently across the state and nationally, including an increase in coronavirus cases among a younger demographic.
“For confirmed cases from March through May, the average age was 61.5,” said Ben Oakley, Blanco County infectious disease control officer. Oakley is the EMS Chief for Blanco County ESD 2.

One of the longest ongoing events in Blanco County will see a hiatus of at least one year.
The Blanco County Fair and Rodeo Association board announced Saturday that the annual county fair and rodeo will be canceled for 2020. It was to be the event’s 90th year.
The board cited health and safety concerns, along with current regulations, as reasons to cancel the county fair and rodeo this year.
Blanco County has the lowest unemployment rate in the nine-county Rural Capital Area region, according to information released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission.
The county’s unemployment rate was 6.1 percent for May 2020. The overall rate in the region for May was 10.6 percent, down from 11.5 percent in April.
The newly appointed Blanco County election administrator has resigned his position.
The county’s election commission accepted the resignation of Robert Sense at the June 18 commission meeting. Sense was hired as election commissioner last month, but was not set to start the position until July.
The county has struggled to fill the position since the previous administrator, Oscar Villarreal, left the job late last fall.
Emergency professionals in Blanco County Emergency Services District 2 have been very busy, Chief Ben Oakley told board members at their June 16 meeting.
In addition to a surge in COVID-19 cases, Oakley said that regular calls have returned to a normal pace now that the state has started to re-open.
“Everything is back to where it was before with things re-opened,” he said.
Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) was formed by Dave Lageman in 2018. An advisory board was created soon after and is composed of Lageman, Greg Hinton, Betsy Scheffe, and Mike Rieken.
Today, there are 70 members who are all willing and eager to spread kindness and help the needy. Anyone can become a member of RAK by simply contacting Lageman via email at [email protected].
Blanco County Judge Brett Bray called the Tuesday regular meeting of the Blanco County Commissioners Court to order at 8:59 a.m. Commissioners Tommy Weir, Emil Uecker, Chris Liesmann and Paul Granberg were present, and the meeting was simulcasted online via Zoom.
Because the meeting was simulcasted, citizens wishing to make a public comment were required to present at the meeting.
Lexi Nicole Nevarez died Monday, June 15, 2020 in Blanco. She was born Sept. 1, 2005 in Fredericksburg, to Rhonda Romero and Ronnie Nevarez. Lexi left us all to soon.

Robin Bruce Somerville, age 77, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Ascension-Seaton hospital in Austin, with his family by his side. Robin was a beloved husband, father, and papa.
Robin was born in Newbury, Berkshire UK, on April 19, 1942 to Arthur and Dorthy Somerville. He came to the United States on July 4, 1979.
He was semi-retired from a career that spanned various businesses and industries.
Roy Max Bible of Johnson City passed away peacefully, Friday, June 19, 2020, at the age of 93 in Fredericksburg, with his family at his side. Roy was born Sept. 5, 1926 in Blanco County to Martin Bible and Ella (Withers) Bible.
Roy attended Johnson City schools until ranching became a full-time commitment.
Lucille Sophie (Maurer) Scharnhorst was born Sept. 4, 1930. She departed this world to be in God’s Hand on June 19, 2020.
She was preceded in death by her husband Milton Scharnhorst on Oct. 8, 1987 and by infant granddaughter, Wendy Lynn Moore, on May 16, 1973. She was the last living sibling of 10 children born to Adolf and Delka Maurer.
She attended the Junction School located just north of Stonewall and completed the 8th grade.
