For almost half a century, a Blanco woman made it her mission to help local nursing home residents, including many of the county’s elderly population. Sophie Johnson retired on June 30 after first working as an administrator at Live Oak Medical in Blanco, which closed in 2017, and then at LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City.
Judge Brett Bray called the special Blanco County Commissioners Court meeting to order at 9 a.m. Tuesday with all four commissioners present. The meeting was simulcast live on the Blanco County YouTube channel, but citizens had to be present at the courthouse to provide public comments. After the pledge, public comments were heard.
It’s that time of the year again, Red Ribbon week! The Red Ribbon Campaign is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed each year Oct. 23-31 and is currently the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the nation. On Oct. 20, the Texas Joint Counterdrug Task hosted a “Be Drug Free” event on the Blanco Elementary School playground.
There are 28 active COVID-19 cases in Blanco County as of Friday, the county’s office of emergency management announced late last week. The total is one fewer than announced Oct. 5, the last time the BCOEM released official totals. This time they have been broken down into 20 active confirmed cases and eight active probable cases.
Don’t forget the Blanco Countywide Household Waste Collection event takes place this Saturday, Oct. 31. Blanco County residents should bring their waste to the Blanco County/Waste Connections Transfer Station at 377 Transfer Road in Johnson City from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by Blanco County, Blanco Pedernales Underground Water Conservation District and Keep Blanco Beautiful. The Coalition on Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment of Substance Abuse (CoAPT) monthly meeting was called to order Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. by Amber Corder, program coordinator. Introductions were made first. Corder provided an update on the vape detectors and explained that the coalition has already purchased six detectors for the high school bathrooms.
Blanco resident named city administrator in August
William Cal Daves II was appointed as the part-time code enforcement officer for the City of Blanco on April 12, 2019. Following the departure of the then-city secretary in January 2020, he began to assume additional roles within the city management and was appointed as the interim city administrator on May 12, 2020. “In the beginning, code enforcement was part-time,” he said.
Evelyn Trammell punched a ticket to the regional cross country meet with her performance at the District 25-3A meet held Monday in Lago Vista. Trammell placed seventh in varsity competition with a time of 14:20.80, qualifying for the regional meet. She will run Nov. 9 at the UIL Region IV Cross Country Championships at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
Blanco wrapped up District 25-3A play with a 3-1 win at Llano on Friday. The set scores were 21-25, 25-9, 25-17 and 25-13. Emilee LaRue pounded the Jackets from the outside hitter position with 27 kills. Jennah Atchley hit seven kills, while Raylee Faris added six kills from the middle. Casey Eskew and Carly Romero each hit two, with Olivia Atchley scoring one. Emma Srackangast, Olivia Atchley and Lily Porter served three aces each.
The Blanco football team tangled with district foe Llano on the road Friday, and fell to the state-ranked squad 42-26. Llano (8-0, 3-0) scored on a 70-yard run in the first minute of the game to take an early 7-0 lead on a chilly night at home. Cade Cress took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 12 yards.
The Blanco junior varsity football team fell to the Llano Yellow Jackets, 28-6. Llano led 14-0 late in the second quarter and was threatening to score again just before the half, but Trevin Young made an interception in the end zone to stop the drive. Llano scored again in the third quarter. The Panthers got on the board with a touchdown run by Fernando Palacios.
A memorial for Tony Vela, former educator and councilman, is planned for Nov. 7, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. The gathering will be in the pavilion at Yett Park. Desserts and refreshments will be served. As required by Blanco County and the City of Blanco, COVID-19 19 guidelines will be followed. Masks and social distancing will be required. Tony’s family is looking forward to visiting and reminiscing with his former students, friends and acquaintances.
Morris (Bud) Baxter Evans, 80, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020. Bud was born on Aug. 28, 1940, in Blanco. Bud was proceeded in death by his parents, Ray and Lela (Dyer) Evans. Bud is survived by his son Bart Evans and wife Cobie of Hye; daughter Dené (Evans) Bertram and husband Jeff of Austin; step-son James Sierra and wife Amy of Blanco; sisters Beth and Judy Evans; and brother Roger Evans. Robert (Bob) H. Dorsett passed away at his home on Friday, Oct. 23, 2020. Bob was born June 27, 1931 in Lawton, Okla., to James and Nora Dorsett. Bob served proudly in the U.S. Air Force. He joined in 1951 at the age of 19 and was stationed in Chateau Roux France until 1953 when he returned home. Anna Lee Slaughter Smith, 86, of Blanco, passed away at her home in Blanco Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020. Anna was born Aug. 1, 1934 in Loraine, Texas to Clyde C. Slaughter and Mabel Lynette (Lee) Slaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Clyde Slaughter, and sister, Lynda Jane Case.
