Wreath retirement went on as scheduled, Saturday, Jan. 30, at cemeteries in Blanco County where wreaths were placed on veterans’ graves in December for Wreaths Across America. Ethan Morash, great grandson of Helen and Alvin Knoll, pictured above, helped out with the event. He was joined by Scout Troop 497, along the Herdens, Wagners, Andersons, Felps, Rusts, Fortunes, Gosnell and Knolls.
It might seem like there’s another letter every day to Blanco Independent School District families and staff members: “Today we were notified that a member of our campus community has tested positive for COVID-19…” Some parents have been feeling a bit uncertain about whether the district will switch back to remote learning, especially after students recently were sent home with their devices, books and lessons.
Pam Meier’s dedication to teaching in the area of conservation earned her a hefty piece of hardware. Meier, a teacher at Blanco Middle School, was awarded the Outstanding Conservation Teacher for 2020 for Zone 2 soil and water conservation districts. She was presented the honor at a January meeting of the Blanco ISD board of trustees. The Pedernales Soil and Water Conservation District nominated Meier for the award.
Dr. Heidi Abraham, MD, FAEMS, began her medical career as an EMT with a volunteer fire department in Ohio in 2004 or 2005. She was recently appointed the local health authority for Blanco County. Abraham’s father encouraged her to pursue medical school. Eventually, she followed his advice and attended Wright State University, where she completed her Emergency Medicine residency as chief resident. Jerry Thompson, of the Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky, on Jan. 26 presents County Judge Brett Bray and the Blanco County Commissioners Court a Hill Country Alliance (HCA) certificate in appreciation for the county’s participation in the Hill Country Night Sky Month. Thompson thanked the court for its efforts to support of the night sky in Blanco County, particularly its efforts to support HCA’s Night Sky Friendly Neighborhood Program.
Two have filed for Blanco city offices as of Monday afternoon. Rachel Lumpee has filed to run for mayor, while Matt Herden has filed to run for Place 1 on the city council. The office of mayor has been vacant since Martha Herden resigned from the office last April. Martin Sauceda, councilman in Place 3, has led the city since that time from his position as mayor pro-tem. Place 1 on the city council is currently held by Keith McClellan. The Hill Country Trail Ride gets underway this weekend and will go through Blanco for the 56th year. The trail ride started with 12 others from across Texas to head into San Antonio to kick off the stock show and rodeo. The trail rides normally kicks off the rodeo riding into the ATT Center, with riders representing each area of Texas.
Results of the 2021 Blanco County Youth Exhibit Hall event were released recently, with 46 4-H, FFA & FCCLA members exhibiting 307 entries. The Junior Sweepstakes Winner was Mariel Steele of Hill Country Spurs 4-H Club. The Senior Sweepstakes Winner was Kinley Felps of the Blanco FFA Chapter. Foods Class Champion-Alayna Steele, Decadent Chocolate Chip Bars Reserve Champion-Kaitlin Hacker, Strawberry Shortcake Fudge Junior Cookies 1.
The Blanco boys basketball team routed the Ingram Warriors by a 99-37 clip on Friday to keep atop the district standings. The Panthers are currently a 17-1 overall and a 6-0 in District 25-3A games. Blanco rolled through the first quarter, scoring 25 points to Ingram’s seven. The Panthers continued pouring in the points in the second quarter, sinking 30, while holding the Warriors to 13 for a commanding 55-20 halftime lead.
The Blanco girls basketball team rolled past the Ingram Lady Warriors 68-14 on Friday. The Lady Panthers are 15-5 on the season and 5-1 in District 25-3A games. Blanco led early, 8-3, at the 4:02 mark of the first quarter. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Panthers expanded their lead to 16-4.
Lois Darlene Kiernan, 85, previously of Blanco, died Jan. 22, 2021. Darlene was born on June 28, 1935 in Denver, Colorado. She was the youngest daughter of Ted and Bertie Leverett. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; two sisters and one brother. She is survived by one brother, Willard Leverett, and her daughter, Dena Jones and husband Steve.
Donald Dale Linder entered the gates of heaven on Jan. 29, 2021, surrounded by those that loved him most. He was born in Austin, Texas on Jan. 14, 1944 to parents Dale and Isabelle Linder. He was a loving husband to Virginia Lee Joy, the love of his life. On Feb.
Louis Moore, age 98, of Coleman, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, at Coleman County Medical Center. Mr. Moore’s wishes were to be cremated and his family has honored that request. His cremated remains will be inurned in the Voss Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. He was born Louis Carlton Moore on Oct.
Yvonne Grace Wegenhoft Leonard, 88, passed peacefully with her daughter Janice Fox by her side, surrounded by love and prayers from her family, in Johnson City. She went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021. Yvonne was born on June 22, 1932, in Rock Island, Texas. Yvonne, affectionately known as “Danny”, was a pioneer for change when women’s roles were evolving, and she did it with grace by supporting family values and honoring traditional roles.
