Two desperate men are on the run in Blanco. They are guilty, to be sure, but not of the murder that they are accused of. Fortunately for all of us, it is fictional, and all the action is being captured in the name of entertainment for the four-part series Death and Compromise on Amazon Prime Video. The time in which the movie is set was one of radical strife and changes in Texas.
Blanco County has administered every last drop of the COVID-19 vaccine doses that were delivered to the county earlier this month, and now officials are awaiting the next shipment as cases continue to climb. The county received a shipment of 300 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine three weeks ago and inoculations of first responders immediately commenced on Jan.
The Blanco County Commissioners Court was called to order at 9 a.m. by Judge Brett Bray. The four commissioners: Tommy Weir, Emil Uecker, Chris Liesmann, and Paul Granberg, were present. There were no public comments at this time. The commissioners approved the minutes of the previous meeting. There were four line item transfers.
During the Blanco Historic Preservation Commission (BHPC) meeting on Monday, Jack Twilley gave a Streetscape Design Presentation. The Blanco City Council passed a resolution responding to the public interest to create a Streetscape committee in October 2009. The resolution reads “to develop a local streetscape program and plan which would result in the historical preservation and beautification of the courthouse square area while protecting and enhancing the economic (re)development withi ...
“Don’t Mess with Texas” (DMWT) is a widely known campaign with a simple message to not litter that started in 1986. The program is sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The DMWT website provides great information and can be found at https://www.dontmesswithtexas.org/. There are many ways you can get involved including Adopt-A-Highway (AHA), “Report a Litterer,” and Trash-Off (TO).
This has been an unusual, different year. Let us hope and pray that this coming year is better. Until things change there are things we need to do in our gardens and landscapes. When weather permits, till or add 2 to 3 inches of compost and organic material into the planting area, to loosen soil and improve moisture retention. It’s time to sharpen tools and cleaning mowers, tillers and edgers plus hand tools.
The Blanco varsity boys basketball team has continued its climb to the top of the District 25-3A standings with two solid wins last week. On a road trip to Llano Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Panthers ran away with a 73-32 victory over the Yellow Jackets. Blanco outscored the Comfort Bobcats, 80-55, Friday, Jan.
The Panther junior varsity powerlifting team competed at the Texas Strength Systems gym in San Antonio Wednesday, Jan. 20. Marc Flores lifted 1060 pounds to take first in his class. Bennett Brock finished fifth in his weight class and Mitch Dallard placed sixth in his class. The Lady Panthers lifted Thursday, Jan.
The Blanco varsity girls basketball team corrected course, avenging its only district loss with a huge 78-22 win Friday, Jan. 22 over the Comfort Deer. Blanco previously lost its first round district match-up with Comfort, 42-38, back on Jan. 5. With a 44-37 win against the Llano Lady Jackets Tuesday, Jan.
Leah Nell made her transition Jan. 19, 2021 in Austin, Texas. She was 95 years old and most of those years were filled with adventure and lots of people. Nell was an entrepreneur in every sense of the word. She held many offices in many different fields. She never met a stranger, which she learned from her father.
Avan T. “Don” Uballe, age 80, of Blanco, passed away on Nov. 30, 2020 in Kerrville, at Waterside Nursing Home. Don was born in San Benito, Texas to Santana Uballe Sr. and Maria Torres Uballe on Oct. 15, 1940. He went to school at Blanco Isd and has been married to his wife Linda for 30 years.
It is with extreme sorrow that we announce the passing of Lucia Herrera Avila. She passed at 5 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2021, at the age of 49. She was surrounded by her family (both virtually and in person). Lucia was born in Santa Maria De La Paz Zacatecas, Mexico on March 25,1971 to Manuel and Louisa Herrera.
David C. Derrenbacher, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
