A shooting in Blanco County on Saturday night left an Army veteran and former Blanco County volunteer firefighter dead and his family in mourning. Donald Boumans, 25, was allegedly shot and killed by his step-father, James “Jim” Mayer Harris Jr., 63, said Chief Deputy Neal Leonard with the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday. “The case is still being investigated,” Leonard said.
Blanco County is closing in on 1,000 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began last year, and almost 100 of those have occurred just in the past few weeks, a county health official said on Tuesday. “We’re definitely seeing a surge of COVID-19,” said Blanco County EMS Chief Ben Oakley, who is the county’s health authority.
Simon Ramirez was 10 years old when he started his career in scouting with the Cub Scout Pack 497 of Blanco. Two years, later he received his Arrow of Light and crossed over to the Boy Scout Troop. With the start of the 2021 high school football season, the Blanco cheerleaders, football players, band and fans welcome the return of a different type of mask than the one we have all become so familiar with the past year and a half. Blanco dropped its 2021 football season opener last Friday, falling 41-27 on the road against Davenport of Comal ISD. The Blanco volleyball team posted a 5-2 mark during the past week, including a 5-1 record at the Johnson City tournament. The Lady Panthers started the week Aug. 24 with a 3-1 loss to the perennially tough Wimberley Texans. Set scores were 19-25, 25-16, 12-25 and 20-25. Emilee LaRue and Elin Kaiser each had 11 kills in the match.
The Blanco junior varsity football team defeated the Brownwood freshman B team 34-0 Thursday, Aug. 26. Colby Murphree threw two touchdown passes to Trevin Young. Young also added another touchdown on the ground. Ryder Moorman and Carson Riba each scored a rushing touchdown. Carlos Chavez kicked four of five PATs. Defensively, Fabian Carrillo had an interception. The junior varsity plays Shiner at the Panther Stadium Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Gary Wayne Pittman, formerly of Blanco, was returned to our Lord and Savior on Aug. 7, 2021. He is preceded in death by his father, Russell Pittman. He leaves behind his wife of 22 years, Larissa Pittman; his daughter, Brittany Lentz and her husband Christopher; his mother, Dorothy M.
