The City Council approved the budget and tax rate at a special meeting on Wednesday Sept. 20. There were no comments at the public hearing for both the tax rate and budget so the council went into regular session to discuss and approve the tax rate and budget. The tax rate and levy is increasing to a rate of $0.465 per $100.
Blanco County Commissioners met for a regular session on Tuesday Sept. 26. They received a report from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and chose a nominee to represent the county to the Blanco County Appraisal District. Conservation Report A representative from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service gave his report for Blanco County.
September is suicide prevention and awareness month. Three Blanco County residents took their own life since last September. When adjusted to the national average, this rate is more than double the national rate. With higher suicide rates reported in rural areas, Hill Country Mental Health Developmental Disability Center is trying to expand support and services in Blanco County. The national suicide rate is 13.26 per 100,000 people.
2017 TAX STATEMENTS IN THE MAIL OCTOBER 2nd The Blanco County Appraisal District will be mailing tax statements on October 2, 2017. There will be approximately 16,000 statements mailed out. Please watch the mail and if you do not receive your statement, please call the Appraisal District at 830-868-4013. Please keep in mind that the Board of Directors of the Blanco County Appraisal District approved a new policy that went into effect on 9/1/17.
The Lady Eagles fell to a rival last Friday in Blanco but came back to beat Gateway Prep school in five games on Tuesday Sept. 27. Eagles vs. Panthers Johnson City volleyball traveled south to Blanco last Friday to take on the lady Panthers. The match was decided in four sets with Blanco coming out ahead. On Friday, October 6th, 2017 the LBJ High School Student Council will be sponsoring a Blood Drive in the High School Gym. Technicians from the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will be available from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The Lady Eagle 8th grade A-team participated in the Burnet Volleyball Tournament this past Saturday. Both eighth grade teams collected wins against Florence this past week. Tournament Being the only 3A school competing against larger schools might have intimidated other teams. But not our Lady Eagles. The team let their talents do the talking. The Lady Eagles faced Burnet first.
I BROKE INTO A GUY’S HOUSE SOMETIME IN 1989 as repayment for his stealing from me. I felt justified in doing it and was quite brazen as I broke and entered in broad daylight, even asking a few neighbors if he was home. In September Hill Country Memorial began hosting a free Quit Smoking Support Group on Wednesdays from 12-1 p.m. at the HCM Wellness Center (1006 S. State Hwy. 16). The support group is for people who want to quit smoking and for those who have already quit and want to continue a smoke-free lifestyle. “If you want to quit smoking, make the commitment to yourself,” said Dawn Sparrow, HCM Smoking Cessation Program Coordinator.
The Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center now offers weekly Turbo Kick classes that combine elements of cardio-kickboxing and body-sculpting dance moves. “Of all the classes I teach, I burn the most calories teaching Turbo Kick,” said group fitness instructor Christine McCown. “Between the fun music and learning combinations, you don’t fully realize how hard you are working.” McCown, a certified Turbo Kick instructor, will teach the class on Wednesdays from 11:15 a.m.
