I absolutely love sharing my outdoors lifestyle via this column each week. I must, I’ve been writing it for just over three decades! As an outdoors writer, I find myself continually exposed to folks that are skilled in all sorts of outdoor endeavors and from each I manage to learn something useful that I can share with you. Just about the time when I think that I ‘know it all’ about a particular subject, along comes someone with a different and often better way of getting it done.
Much Remains on Table as Legislature Begins Final Week
AUSTIN— As the Texas Legislature entered the final week of its 140-day 86th regular session, Texans continued to wait for lawmakers to wrap up priority issues: the 2020-2021 state budget, property tax reform and school finance reform. Of the more than 7,000 bills Senate and House members have filed proposing to create, amend or repeal a law, only 56 had passed and been forwarded to the governor's desk for final approval as of Sunday, May 19.
This year’s Llano County Beef & Range Field Day is set for Tuesday, May 28. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the John L. Kuykendall Arena & Events Center, 2200 Ranch Road 152, about 1.7 miles west of Llano. The program will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and there is no charge to the participant.
On Monday, May 13, Google announced that in one year 119,000 Texas businesses, publishers and nonprofits used Google search and advertising tools to connect with the people and communities they serve, generating $20.8 billion in economic activity. By using Google products businesses increased their online presence and were able to grow, bringing more money and jobs into the local economy.

The Burnet County Historical Commission (BCHC) continues its recognition of the county's remarkable people for the fourth year on July 2, 2019. In the spotlight will be individuals who have made an impact on our community with their acts of kindness, economic impacts, and philanthropic influences, or simply being an exemplary mother or father. Originally called the Burnet County Women of Note in honor of Women's History Month in 2016, the commission decided to thank the women who have made ...
Emergency management, fire officials and local advocates urged Central Texas residents to prepare for the 2019 wildfire season, which started in May, by staying aware of their wildfire risk, actively mitigating dangers, and being prepared to act. Residents can accomplish these tasks by becoming a Firewise USA Community and registering at WarnCentralTexas.org to get emergency alerts from local public safety personnel by text message, cellphone call, or email. “We like to say that wildfires ...
With just ten days left in the 86th Legislative session, the Senate approved legislation last week that would end two traffic enforcement programs that are unpopular with both citizens and lawmakers. The first would repeal the Drivers' Responsibility Program (DRP), created in 2003 as a way to help fund trauma care in Texas.
The Fredericksburg Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas invites all members of the community to hear the free presentation, “Rain-scaping— Water-Wise Landscaping”, by Shannon Brown. Shannon Brown, owner of Ecosystem Regenerative Artisans (ERA) in San Marcos, designs resilient native plant gardens and landscapes that not only conserve water during dry spells, but mitigate flooding during downpours.
Deion Sanders and Sammy Baugh are in the NFL Hall of Fame, and both played defensive back among other positions. Michigan’s Charles Woodson, a DB, is in the College Hall and won the Heisman Trophy in 1997. All would be proud of the Seniors who intercepted four passes by the Juniors en route to a 19-0 win, May 15, in the annual Llano High School Powderpuff game.
FREDERICKSBURG—The Llano volleyball Jackets are spending a portion of the last month of school in the Battlin’ Billies’ gym, and, on May 14, beat Junction two games to none. “{It’s been} a lot of fun,” said Head Coach Dee Heiner. “We’ve been mixing teams so the kids have to step up and be leaders.” Heiner, who begins her second year in Llano on the first of August, is positive about the upcoming season.
BURNET—The football Jackets have had trouble with the Bulldogs in autumn for just over two decades—their last win was in 1998, a “century” ago. However, in 7-on-7 encounters the last couple of weeks, Llano has done quite well—two for two, May 13, and one win, one tie, May 20. “Case {Kuykendall} was sharp,” said Head Coach, Matt Green.
It was one of the most amazing comebacks of all time. Forget about the Patriots’ win over the Falcons in the Super Bowl after being down, 28-3. And toss aside Country House—one of the few athletes who can say, “Don’t laugh at second place—it won me the Derby!” On a warm May 17 afternoon, ideal for a game of this magnitude, Richard Kattner put the icing on his first-year-in-Llano cake with a game-winning, three-run homer that would have gone out of Fenway and Yellowstone Parks. ...
The Jackets did fine in a 7-on-7 tournament, May 18, that would allow one of eight teams to qualify for the state tournament. Llano won two out of three games but lost the opener to Wimberley and didn’t make it, but will have a second chance June 8 and June 15. Onward.

He met Ruth Jean Peace a few years later, and they married on July 19, 1957. They went on to have two daughters, Linda and Patricia. Jerry and Ruth were very serious about their breakfasts at Cracker Barrel and would arrive before the restaurant opened so they could be sure to be seated at “their” table.

This question has been very present as of late. We as gardeners and small farmers have had a mystery lurking with the death of many plants in the garden to the entire garden. Let's have a look at something that has arrived at my door, which is in the manure and hay: the mainstay for fertilizing and adding carbon structure in our soils. This is how we prepare our soils for as long as we have been growing by using composted animal manure with a large addition of carbon added for the compostin ...
