GATESVILLE—It’s like the dentist saying, “We’re done.” Or the taste leaves your mouth after a swig of medicine and a wince of misery. The Llano boys’ basketball team, in its final game of 2016, ended a losing streak of 18 games this season and maybe close to 30 for a merciless calendar year. “Feels good to get one,” said a relieved Aaron Nuckles, in his first campaign as Jackets’ head coach.
Season Two — continues — and it’s district play from now on. The Llano girls (0-2) hoped to win their first 19-4A contest, January 3 — after press time — at Glenn High in Leander. Burnet visits January 6. “I think we’re tested and ready,” said head coach Jerry McSherry. The final tune-ups were at the Breckenridge High School tournament — in North Texas — December 27-29, and the Jackets recorded a 2-2 mark giving them five wins for the seaso ...
If you can’t understand the creative headline, it translates to: The following is a montage of thoughts, which range from superficial to its Roget twin: cursory. Should coaches be allowed to call timeouts? Absolutely not! In basketball, the referees, oftentimes, are not looking their way and cannot hear them in a noisy arena.
I have been following sports since 1950, as I have mentioned before. It took me several years, after everyone else knew what a point guard was, before I did. Despite John Heflin’s tutelage, I’m still not clear on what cover-2 means. And I hate walk-off the most of all descriptions in athletics. But what several college football players have done recently makes the above seem as pure as a baby’s cheek after a bath. Christian McCaffrey of Stanford and Leonard Fournette of LSU are two of the ...
I really like to look back on the highlights in sports when December 31 approaches. I get to be the tour guide. Please join me. Near Waveland Avenue The Cubs were the Team of the Year, writing the Story of the Year. World Series Champions for the first time since 1908. Chicago edged the Indians, 8-7, in 10 innings in Game 7, to complete a comeback of not just 108 years, but trailing 3-1 in games. Cleveland hasn’t won the Series since 1948.
Center wins national title with Mary Hardin-Baylor football team
BELTON — The dateline — the city mentioned a few words ago — isn’t totally a stretch. I did see Mary Hardin-Baylor beat Linfield College of Oregon, 27-10, here, November 26, in the second round of the Division III playoffs. That was en route to a national championship, and Llano’s Colton Center was part of the perfect-season ride. “The first time I thought we could win the big one this year was the third game of the regular season when we ran over then third-ranked Linfield, 66-27.
MASON — One game was not close at all, but the one here was a good one. Neither contest was decided in favor of the Llano basketball boys, who remain winless for November-December. The Punchers — on this cold December 19 afternoon — started plenty warm and led, 13-4. “Couldn’t have been a worse start for us,” said Jackets’ head coach, Aaron Nuckles. Things did improve, and when Ian Fletcher tossed in two of his ...
The Lady Jackets played one of their best games of the season, December 16, but failed to get a win against visiting Lampasas, a district foe. The Badgers (7-11 and 1-2), in front all night, held off a spirited Llano rally and prevailed, 54-52. “The kids played hard to get back in the game,” said head coach Jerry McSherry. “As long as they play hard and are giving effort, we’ll stay in games and win some games.” Tough go ...
From Art Dlugach, Texas, USA December 21, 2016 I know you’re busy. A “jolly” remark, no? But I have a request, and I haven’t made too many over the dozens of Decembers of our lifetimes. How old are you now, anyway? I can’t hear you! I want you to give our Llano boys a basketball win — well, not GIVE it to ‘em.
Ray Dixon was named the lineman MVP for District 13-4A to headline several Llano selections. Named to the first team were Mason Greenwood at running back, Brent Greenwood at linebacker, Dakoda Trull at offensive lineman, Ian Fletcher at linebacker and Tyler Gann at cornerback. Named to the second team were: John Heflin-RB, Anthony Watson-WR, Hunter Roemer-DL, Blake Dillard-DE, Jaden Napolez-LB, Kyle Cooper-DB and Shane Flint-Special Teams.
