St. Patrick’s Day. Comin’ our way. Hooray, hooray. Callooh! Callay! They chortle in their joy. And drink green beer. Wear green clothes. Green because of the shamrock. St. Patrick supposedly used the three-leaved plant to explain the Holy Trinity to pre-Christian Irish. St. Patrick was actually British. Kidnapped by invading Irish. And kept as a slave in Ireland. Then escaped back to Britain. Then later returned to Ireland as a devout Christian. He died March 17, 461 A.D. And to this day, h ...
Yes, I am grumpy. It was very early to get up this morning. Spring break is this week for area schools. I expect to be busy. The trouble is, my grandkids are allergic to raking leaves and pulling weeds in the garden. For your calendar: Class Meetings continue on Tuesday nights at the parsonage.
Spring is officially just around the corner, and it seems that we have been experiencing spring for most of the past couple of months, but with the time change it seems to be more firmly in place. The bluebonnets are starting to make their presence known and the tourists are making their plans to come to the Hill Country in the next few weeks, so be aware and keep your eyes out for those who do not always act just as we expect.
A Reach for the Stars... When folks strive greatly to take from life what matters most--learning along the way that it’s mostly about giving--phrases like “giant strides” or “standing tall” come into play. It seems “Texan to the core” to do so. Sometimes, though, along comes someone who learns early on that noteworthy accomplishments also can accrue from taking smaller steps, reaching higher and working harder. Such was a delightful man named Richard (Dick) Collin ...
There are two shows on television that give me motivation. One is “Hoarding” and the other is “My 600 Pound Life!” When I watch “My 600 Pound Life,” I lose my appetite! Really, this has me thinking and I no longer eat while watching this one. And the other one “Hoarding,” has me looking around the room for stuff to get rid of.
We are in the almost spring mode. That place where you are so excited to get those plants out in the garden. And as it is almost spring we are still in winter weather with all the ups and downs of temperatures and moisture. So take some time and wait till after Easter to put those tender starts out into the ground.
Kaput As you know if you have an IQ higher than celery, the Lone Star State is overrun with hogs. Texas has feral hogs out its ears, and they do millions of dollars’ worth of damage every year. And despite the best efforts of Texans to shoot them, trap them, ambush them, rain death on them from the air, and even blow them up with binary explosives, there are more of them than ever.
Spring is coming and with the warm weather many of us are itching to get out in our gardens. Not sure what design you want or what plants to use? The library is a great resource. We have titles from Texas wildscapes: gardening for wildlife to Greenhouses & garden sheds: inspiration, information & step-by-step projects--and more!

Awards, Honors and Accolades,,, Oh My! Every week, I have to do a juggling act with the items we have for that week's paper. I've often told folks that laying out each week's paper is akin to putting together a jigsaw puzzle where you don't always have the final picture for reference; and, the pieces keep changing shape and size. Layout involves numerous elements: time limitations, relevance to readers, aesthetic appearance, availability of images and availability of space base ...
