In early June, 13 names were etched onto the 4th Veteran’s Memorial located on the courthouse lawn. This has been an ongoing project of the Mason County Historical Commission for several years. So far, there are well over 400 names on those memorials which honor Mason citizens that have served in our military. The first memorial list veterans serving from the Texas War of Independence, Civil War, Mexican American War and the Spanish American War.

Mason Physical therapy and Wellness center celebrated the official chamber of commerce Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the clinic on Wednesday, June 28th 2017 . The clinic, which is located at 216 West College, directly behind the Frontera Medical Clinic, has been treating patients since Feb 1, 2016. The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, June 27th, for it’s weekly luncheon meeting. There were 29 members and four visitors in attendance. “Boss” Lion Jess Irwin read thank you notes from the Mason High Seniors who received scholarships from our club and passed out sign up sheets for volunteer duties at the upcoming rodeo roundup.

The heat and sunshine have come again, and I hope everyone had an opportunity to get out and enjoy the Fourth of July with family and friends. The nice rains of ten days ago are pretty much dried up again, and we all need to remember as we look forward to more sunshine and hot weather that water conservation is important every day.

Midwestern State University had 442 undergraduate and graduate students who were awarded degrees in May 2017. Honor graduates receiving bachelor’s degrees included 42 summa cum laude, 64 magna cum laude, and 92 cum laude.

Mason’s 9-10 year-old baseball season concluded last week with a 3rd place finish in District. For the season they earned a Championship at Mason’s Tournament (see picture), Runner-up at Llano’s Tournament and 3rd Place at both the Burnet and District Tournaments. Competition included: Burnet, Boerne, Bulverde, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Brady, Llano, San Saba and Hamilton. Let’s learn about cells, DNA, and animals like in Where the Wild Things Are! Wednesday, July 5th will be the first Science Fun Day at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library, 410 Post Hill St. The activities will be appropriate for children in grades K-5. The fun will begin at 10:00 A.M.

It is very early to write this column. I am having trouble thinking three days early. I hope everyone had a safe and fun Fourth of July holiday. Roundup is coming up fast. Granddaughter Megan is in a play this weekend with the Llano Community Theater. Grandma is busy. Class meetings continue at the Art United Methodist Church on Wednesday evenings.

The American Legion Fort Mason Post 285 and VFW Post 8554 will be sponsoring a Mason County Veterans float in the 2017 Mason Roundup Parade on Saturday, July 8th. Any veteran who would like to ride on the float should call either Joaquin Velez, 218-2049, or Tommy Koepke, 347-6021, to reserve a seat because space is limited. Riders, in uniform if possible, should assemble in front of the American Legion Post Hall, 237 Post Hill Road [behind the County Jail] at 8:30am on Saturday.

Samaritan Dear Editor, My family and I would like to thank the incredibly helpful people who were a part of making sure that I received the care that I needed on June 12, when I was involved in a roll-over accident on FM 1871. I would like to thank the ‘good samaritan’ who came upon the accident and called for help, EMS, the Mason County Fire Department’s Rescue Unit, and Puncher Towing. Duplication Dear Gerry, I’ve been involved in the pet industry for many years as a boarding kennel operator, veterinary assistant, obedience trainer, etc. For 8 years in Austin I ran a rescue group from my boarding kennel - I was affiliated with animal shelters in Austin, Kyle, and Cedar Park, and rehabilitated and placed over 1,000 dogs.

H.C. Reichenau—a friend I met H.C. Reichenau in September, 2000. He was outgoing, friendly, and personable. In the last seventeen years, I spoke with him many times—each time a welcoming occasion. Like in the original, black and white cowboy movies, H.C. would address me as “Partner.” H.C. welcomed young children, elders, and everyone inbetween.

By any other name You may never have heard of Pauline Phillips. You also may never have heard of Norma Jean Mortenson, or Archibald Leach, or Marion Morrison. And that’s OK, because those people never used those names a whole lot. They didn’t have to. I guess they were able to afford to have extra names. Norma Jean Mortenson was far better known as Marilyn Monroe.

There seems to be a lot of designated days, weeks and etc.. these days! Boss’s Day, Secretary’s Day, Friends Week, and the list goes on and on. Thus, I pronounce this is “Piddling Month!” You just piddle around. No have to “TO-DOs!” Where you’re free to wear your PJ’s all day! This means no cooking, just microwaving!

Who You Gonna Call?... Not so many years ago, when children were asked to do household chores, they might register resistance with beginning letters of four words--“TNMJ.” (That’s Not My Job.) Such requests made these days might just as well be directed to telephone poles, since most children have “buds” in their ears, choosing to listen to sounds more soothing or entertaining than parental verbiage. But wait.
