The Board of Trustees of MISD met for their regular meeting on October 30, 2017 at the School Administration Office. Board President Jeff Durst called the meeting to order at 5:00 pm with members Tommy Bierschwale, Jim Bob Smith, Julio Ramon, Tina Cantu-Navarro, Treg Hudson and Kathryn Martin in attendance.

Where does the time go? It seems like only yesterday it was 100 degrees-plus - oh wait - this is fall in Texas, it WAS yesterday! Despite the calendar now being situated firmly in November, time change firmly behind us, and toilet paper streaming from many trees in Mason a reminder that Halloween is already “in the bag,” the rest of the year - holiday season - approaches with lightning speed.

The white team traveled to Llano last week to take on the Jackets. Llano started off with a quick touchdown early in the game. The Punchers then took a long drive and was finally able to punch it into the end zone. A few costly mistakes put the game out of reach as Llano won the game 41-14.

The 216 students and the entire faculty of Mason High School agree this was the best Blue Ribbon Service Day ever. The icing on the cake was the unveiling of the newly refurbished Lillys’ Garden. Some may not know that Lilly Joy Gamel, the teenage daughter of Steve and Merlina Gamel, died in a tragic accident in 2004.

“Boss” Lion Jim Heidelberg convened the weekly meeting of the Mason Lions Club on November 7. Twenty-eight members, including our guest speaker attended the meeting. “Boss” Jim reminded members there will be no meeting on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Day. “Boss” Jim invited members to attend the District 2-A1 2nd Cabinet Meeting in Brady on November 10-11.

Blue Ribbon Service Day came around again last Tuesday, and the students and their supervisor worked hard. The school has sent a “crew” for the past few years, and this project is truly helpful. We want to thank supervisor Stephanie Pierce and students Makenna Palacio, Kyra Wilson, Luis Cardenas, Ko Tedder, and Tyler Schmidt for doing a wonderful job cleaning up both inside and outside the library! Last Saturday, the Mason Junior High Band sent 16 students to Burnet to try out for the All Region Band and 6 of them qualified with 2 being alternates. I was really proud of the kids, they performed really well and it is a great accomplishment to have that many make the band.

The Cowgirls represented Mason at the State Cross Country Meet in Round Rock, last Saturday, November 4th. The girls had a fantastic race with three of our runners recording their person best times! The dedication, hard work, sweat, and tears of these girls paid off as they placed fourth in the state!

An organizational meeting to work out details for a 4-H Horse Club will be held Monday, December 4, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. at the Mason Rodeo Arena.  The club is open to children Kindergarten through High School who are interested in learning about and working with horses.  Details about a schedule, meeting times, and activities will be discussed at this first meeting.  For more information contact the Mason County Extension Office at 325-347-6459.

Filling for the 2018 Republican Primary began Saturday, November 11, 2017, and will continue through Monday, December 11, 2017, at 6:00 PM. In the early 1900s, I became interested in my family genealogy and Czech heritage. While on a field trip with a bunch of antiquers, I found a creamer reasonably priced and marked “Made in Czechoslovakia.” Thus, the collection began. Since that Czechoslovakia has come out of the many years spent under communism and split into two countries now known as Czech Republic and Slovakia. The first perfume bottle was a gift from my husband.

Earlier this year, the Hickory UWCD entered into a contract with HydromodelHost to integrate the groundwater model developed by the Texas Water Development Board with real time data collected by the District. The project is finally complete and the “big reveal” will take place at the District Office at 111 East Main Street, Brady, TX on Thursday, November 16 at 2 p.m.

The regular meeting of the Mason Garden Club will be held onTuesday, November 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Stribling Room of the Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. Anne Brown of Fredericksburg, Master Gardener, will present a program on “Plant Propagation”. If you ever wanted to learn how to increase your plants, this is the program for you. The Brady Medical Clinic staff is coming to Mason this Friday, the 17th from 9:00 -10:00 a.m. over at the Mason radio station, 102.5 FM Lone Star, to administer drive thru flu shots! This is the first year to bring these to Mason from Brady. Here are the helpful hints: You have to be 18 and older, we do not file insurance while doing a remote clinic, if you have Medicare or Medicaid, there is no charge, everyone must have a photo ID.

Doris Grote has finished her memoirs! Doris has led an interesting life, among other things having traveled to eighteen countries, hunted rattlesnakes, and shot an elk, so her memoirs are sure to be entertaining. Cheri Glass edited the book, and Brad Glass was the technical advisor. They have gifted the Mason Co.

Fall is finally here. We have had a few cold fronts, Texas style, that change the wind direction, offer a few sprinkles, and cool us down for a few days. The calendar is filling up with all the activities that come with holidays. I really love this time of year. Class meetings continue at the Art United Methodist Church.
