Fall is Football... Spring Is Everything Else! Mason has a rather unbalanced system of calendering events. It's probably not just us, as I would imagine most small towns in Texas suffer through the same travails that we do when marking up the calendar and making our plans. Summers are relatively laid back and relaxed.
Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who insist on enjoying life to the fullest, are DONE WITH WINTER!!! Never mind the “but it was a mild winter,” or “but you got such cute winter clothes for Christmas this year.” We are DONE!! Because of our rapidly advancing age, unfortunately accompanied by our rapidly advancing waistlines, the new, politically correct rule is we can complain endlessly if we feel like it!
Odeon Mason county has more than one Gem, and it’s the Odeon theater. What a wonderful theater to have in a small town like Mason. Not only do we have good movies but live music venues that have something for everyone, from classical to country and everything in between. How about the free classic movie scheduled for once a month on the third Wednesday.
There is a theme here, isn’t there? These were some of my favorite foods that one of my Grandmothers prepared for me whenever I was young – and on a wood-burning stove! All I need to do is smell or taste those flavors and I am seated at her table on a Sears Roebuck catalog (to better reach the table) and always licking my plate clean when I finished.

A Patriot to the Core… Most veterans stand proudly on annual dates they’re honored, springing to their feet when their military branches are introduced and their “fight songs” played in musical medleys. Ken Kelley, however, squirms a little, wondering what others think of his standing repeatedly during tributes to four U.
Alpaca suitcase My research department, a fellow named Pat Wentworth, has been busy lately. Pat sends me outstanding news items from time to time, always good stuff I can write about in my column. In return I promise never to reveal his name in print. After a recent column about the abundance of polar bears, despite the detrimental effects of ‘climate change,’ Pat sent me a Unilad piece about a little problem they’re having over in Russia.
We had a terrific turnout for J. L. Wilkins’ country music show last week--the Stribling Room was filled to the max! As if playing the guitar, fiddle, bass, and drums weren’t enough, he’s now added the mandolin to his array of musical talents, and he put on another wonderful show!
Bread Machine French Bread Practical Baker Original Recipe I have one of these really fancy bread machines, but have never been too impressed with the quality of the breads I’ve prepared in it. I decided to come up with a recipe that produced a better product, so I began to experiment. Since it takes 4 hours to make a loaf of bread in my machine, I got to spend a lot of time wondering just exactly how each loaf would turn out.
