The Ones Who Came Before...
When we talk about Mason, it's often a very narrow definition of just the people who were here all their lives, or the people who live here now. We talk about our ancestors, we talk about our families and friends, we talk about our contemporaries. But, through the years, there have been many other people who have been part of our community, even if they were here for only a short time.
Last week, I got news that one of those people who were an integral part of ...

Small towns are disappearing from the American landscape. They’re out there.

Take Texas State Highway 29.
Go west, young man or woman.
A glorious one awaits you near the county line.
From there to Menard it just gets better and better.
They’re mostly on the right.
On the north side of the highway.
Wonder why that is.
Maybe the bar ditch stays wetter (and cooler) than on the south ...

The Adventure Continues…
They met in college at a time of comparative innocence. Father Knows Best was the rage on TV; Ken and Barbie weren’t yet a couple.
The TV show and the famous dolls--one might suggest--were bookends for a real life romance that began 65 years ago on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
A 1953 graduate of Fort Worth Poly High School, the former Sue Cherry spread her wings at H-SU.
Just the other day
He was born just the other day, during a war that was taking place halfway around the world. Proof, maybe, that life would still go on, that good things happen in a world where so much bad occurs. The beginning of something impossible to understand or describe, something that has to be experienced, lived.

Hungry Horace’s Hi-Jinks

The other day while playing golf with Tom, Dick, and Jerry (really that’s their names) they tried to convince me that I couldn’t possibly become even a fair golfer.
Chess Pie

This is another very old Southern recipe; sort of a variation on the Chess Bars recipe that I will be sharing you. The origin of the name is still shrouded in mystery, but that mystery certainly doesn’t take away the fact that this a very sweet, delicious pie that’s easy to make and will disappear quickly!
Ingredients:
½ cup butter
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 tablespoon cornmeal
¼ cup evaporated milk
