Don Jacques exceeds the speed of sound in 1953 and still moves at a supersonic pace as he approaches 90
Local resident Don Jacques has been part of the Mason community since 1991, when he and his late wife, Wanda Faye Hurley, returned to the area to restore her family ranch in Camp Air.
Boss Lion Marty Bentson opened the March 12 meeting of the Mason Lions Club by welcoming our three guests, Marie Jo Westermeier, M.D., Tad Kirby, son of Lion Mark Kirby, and Landyn Smith, daughter of Lion Chase Smith.
The Mason Lions Club was pleased to learn that it had been given a Melvin Jones Fellowship to award to one its deserving and outstanding members for service to the Lions Club and the Community.
It always seems that as spring begins to add color to our landscapes with the wildflowers and budding trees, the local calendar also becomes much more active with special events and fundraisers. With multiple concerts, activities and dinners it is sometimes hard to choose which to attend and support, and while all of them are important to the complete and vital community we want, it is a challenge to fill our calendars with all of the opportunities.
Although February was a short month, Second Chance made great progress! We were successful in rescuing and placing 6 stray and abandoned animals, with 4 of them being at high risk for euthanasia. A total of 9 dogs were placed in permanent homes. Four were adopted directly through the organization and 5 of the sweet puppies who were born in the Mason pound facility in December 2018, were adopted immediately after transfer to a coalition shelter outside of this county.

Mason resident Tonya Huston recently returned from a mission trip to Rwanda, Africa in support of Heart and Sole Africa (HASA), an organization she founded a decade ago to help end Podoconiosis. Podoconiosis is a debilitating, chronic form of Elephantiasis caused by the absorption of silica (glass) from the rich volcanic soil of the Virunga area of Western Rwanda.

There are only eleven days until The Riata Fundraiser, so be sure to stop by Mason Bank to view this year’s collection of art; which will be available at the Live Auction. Remember, if you are unable to attend the auction and wish to place a bid, you can contact us at [email protected].
This past weekend I enjoyed yet another fine concert at the Odeon Theater. The performers were complimenting the theater and the new dressing room addition completed last year. They said it was one of their favorite venues in which to perform. The fact that it was their 5th time to perform here underscores their accolades for this fine gem.
Classic Movie Night at the Odeon continues after a huge success at the opening event. A nearly packed house was in attendance to view one of America’s top 100 greatest films of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird. Next up, Wednesday March 20, is Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
Many of us awoke the morning of October 16 last year to find our computer screens filled with the graphic below, predicting near-record flooding for the Llano River. Who created this graphic? How was it created and what is its accuracy? How should I use this information to protect my family and my property?
These questions and more will be addressed at the Flood Forecasting Workshop at the Castell General Store, Thursday, March 21, 2019 when representatives from the National Weather Service ...
Welcome Spring. The calendar says today is the first day of spring. The bluebonnets and other flowers are peeking out. I am ready for spring.
The Art United Methodist Church had a wonderful song service Sunday. We were all blessed by the talents of many. Thank you to Laura Lewis for coordinating this service.
Spring break is history.

As I do my best to get me out of the way, putting all emotion and sensationalism aside, while it is easy to make light of the absolute ignorance shown by those who want to win the White house by making the claim that we will all be extinct in 12 yrs.
The Surprises of Spring....
Every year, along about January, people in the hill country start walking around with their heads down, focused on the ground. Occasionally, they dig the toe of their shoe into the ground and examine what they find. They move on, and repeat the same actions again and again.
It is the annual search for the state of the bluebonnet crop!
By January, the distinctive green plants that will grow into the stunning blue flowers have begun popping up all over the land ...
Although Mason suffers from a lack of current economic activity and employment opportunity, this deficit is largely made up for by the quality of life it provides. ‘Quality of Life’ is a term that describes the standard of a community or person’s health, comfort, and happiness in their daily life experience.
Pepper Crunch Cornbread
courtesy: Genius Recipes
If you’d like to try a different twist on your cornbread, whip up a batch of this. It’s baked more like a biscuit or a scone and the same cold pockets of butter that make your biscuits and scones work, work their magic on this pan of cornbread.
Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup sugar
1 cup cornmeal, preferably coarse, but fine will work fine
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 ½ teaspoons salt

I hope you are following the progress of Camp Discovery, our play area project, on our Facebook page. Things a really starting to move along. The floor is installed in the pavilion, the electricity hookup for the solar lights is ready, the lines are being laid for the rainwater catchment system, and the pathways and fencing are next!
When my wife and I traveled to Corpus Christi a couple of weeks ago to attend the 61st annual conference of the Texas Outdoor Writers Association, I expected to be roasted. Figuratively. One lucky TOWA member is fortunate enough to be publicly denigrated and humiliated every year, and I happened to be on the menu for 2019.
A roast is where several people who have known the victim for a good while are invited to regale the audience with past examples of the honoree’s most spectacular mista ...
Robots on the Loose…
If a union organizer at a convention of robots urges “them” to unite, the rep might learn that “they” already have. Or, so it could appear.
So far, robots generally have made us smile, releasing us from performing mundane chores. Now, however, they’re being utilized to “do the dirty work.”
I shall opt out of investigating their new “jobs” too deeply.

Bringing in the sheaves,
Bringing in the sheaves.
We shall come rejoicing,
Bringing in the sheaves.
One of the most popular hymns for Protestant Christians.
Inspired by Psalm 126:6.
Written in 1874.
With a wide range of renditions.
From Frank Zappa.
To characters on “The Simpsons.”
To Granny on “Beverly Hillbillies.”
We shall come rejoicing,
Bringing in the sheaves.
And the coastal hay.
And calling up the cows.
And the wash off the line.
