Boss Lion Michael Murphy gaveled the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m. at Nacho’s Café on October 15. I made a mistake in last week’s column. It was stated that the meeting took place on August 13. That was incorrect, the meeting reported on last week took place on October 8.

I hope you are enjoying the fall weather as much as we are. We are getting ready for winter. The first freeze could be right around the corner. The deer have already found the bird feeders that I put out this week. I worry that the squirrels will get all the seed.

Sometimes You Just Use What You Got!!!! During Monday nights City Commission meeting, much of the discussion was about obtaining the best possible information before making important decisions. The gist was that, with more information, and more examination, better decisions would result. On the surface, that makes perfect sense and is something that I think all of us can agree with, even in our own lives.
Experts Response to City Council meeting 10/21/2019 Need for a Budget Committee? Some good and valid opinions were given Monday night at the City Council meeting. Some actually pertained to the question being discussed....Do we need more than one person to create a sensible budget for our town? Some opinions did not pertain to that question. Is the City a business?
City Climate We are troubled by the “climate change” that has come over the Mason City Commission in the past 18 months. Adversarial challenges and obstructionist behaviors have eroded the once respectful and cooperative body, to the detriment of our town. The opinion and will of the citizens has been disregarded; respect and appreciation for our city workers has declined. We would like to see our leaders get off their soap boxes, throw away their personal agendas, and buckle down to ...
Kendal Hemphill Gerry, I’m surprised and disappointed in your decision to assuage the delicate sensibilities of certain local liberals by cancelling Kendal’s column. Mike Pledger
Kendal Gerald, We are very disappointed that the Mason News will not carry the Kendal Hemphil columns after the end of October. His witty reporting of strange happenings and people's odd situations was really funny. We loved to read them each week. The political satire was usually very apt with a lot of common sense included.
Losing Kendal Gerry: I was surprised & saddened to learn that as the end of October Mason County News will no longer be publishing Kendal Hemphill’s weekly column. It is one of the things I like most about the Mason County News & I have read it faithfully every week since I moved here from liberal brain dead California over 10 years ago. I enjoyed Kendal’s sometimes corny humor but what I liked most was his political comments on what is happening in our once great country.
City Staff Mason has been blessed to have intelligent, thoughtful City Commissioners who have deep roots here. When it comes to brilliant minds, more is more. The brighter the minds focusing on an issue the better the odds for a positive outcome. This is Mason. Gerry Gamel once wrote an article about being kind in a small community because we all have to depend on each other. Don’t be afraid of information and be grateful that God has given us brilliant people who care enough to ...
Not a Goodbye Mason County Friends, I have mixed emotions having to write this, but I figured this would be the best way to say thank you! Some may be happy, and others may not care! But We care, because this community has been a blessing to us, in many ways outside of Erna…. Unfortunately, the current state of the Frac Sand Industry has put ERNA FRAC SAND in a situation, to where we can no longer operate.
Liberal Media I, for one, am outraged at the cancellation of Kendal Hemphill's "Outdoor Outpost" column. It certainly seems DC politics is alive and well in our small little town. My question is this: how many complaints does it take to shut down an opinion and silence a voice? Is it 2?
Kendal's Column If it is true that you are canceling Hemphill’s column because a few people are complaining about his politics, I’m truly disappointed in you. I agree with Mr. Hemphill when he says that when conservatives don’t like a column (or a tv program, etc.), they don’t read or watch it. When liberals don’t like it, they try to shut it down because they’re offended.
“Singin’ in the rain. We’re happy again. In the early morning rain. And nowhere to go. Raindrops keep falling on our heads. ‘Cause, Baby, the rain must fall.” Nearly 800 songs exist about rain. Rain changes perspective. Forget praying for peace in the Middle East. Pray for rain! Talk about an attitude adjustment. That’ll solve everything. Rain. We saw it. Sometimes we get it. We live to tell the tale. To tell how much fell. How it broke the dry sp ...

Slow Cooker Autumn Chicken Loving the cooler weather! At least it is starting to feel like autumn! You know I have to throw in a “Crock Pot” recipe every once in awhile. This is one of my go to recipes when I feel like I’m in a cooking rut. The aroma when you walk in the door will make your mouth water.
A Horn Half-Tooted?... Ever come across a situation--however minor--that activates curiosity? Responding to minutia I often uncovered in youthful years, my old mother often said, “It don’t amount to a hill of beans.” Such moments, insignificant as they may have been, are like puppy love. They matter to puppies, and to us as well, particularly when they linger in our minds longer than warranted.
It’s a tossup Although the next presidential election is still more than a year away, the Democrat Party is chin-deep in its ‘Let’s Pick Someone Who Has A Chance Of Beating Trump’ selection process. And before I get a lot of reader mail, let me just state up front that I have decided not to run for president next year.
We want to thank all the members of Friends of the Library who organized and worked the Wine & Cheese Party and, especially, Joe David and Heather Yates for hosting it in their home! For all of you Friends who came and those who couldn’t, thank you for your continued support of the library!
Mile High Biscuits courtesy: Eugenie Morrison I came across this recipe in an old, Atlanta, GA cookbook that was published in 1968 by the hospital guild. Since I jump on every biscuit or roll recipe that I can find, I thought I’d share this one with you. I don’t remember too many biscuit recipes that call for whipping cream, so this one was a first for me. Ingredients: 2 ½ cups whipping cream 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons baking powder 2 teaspoons salt 4 cups flour ...
