The recent renovations to the tennis courts at the high school are almost finished. We encourage everyone to drive by and look at the progress. When finished, our community will enjoy the best tennis complex around for the most decorated tennis program in the state! This project would not have been possible without the financial commitment from Mason ISD.

The City crews repaired and finished Bickenbach Low Water crossing this past week. Bickenbach is now opened to the public. I want to thank the City Crews for their efforts and dedication to Mason for a job well done in saving our citizens valuable funds. When we all work together, we can accomplish many things.
If you have driven down Bickenbach Ave in the past few days you will find that the low water crossing for Comanche Creek has now been replaced and is reopened. This is not a regular every day route for most of us, but it is the primary access for Gooch Cemetery and is important on those days when we have to say “goodbye” to someone in our community.
Sometimes, even when you're watching a game live, it can be so confusing that trying to determine what is happening can be quite difficult. Friday night's meeting with the Brackettville Tigers is one of those games that, at almost every turn, defies description. The officiating, as well as the running of the scoreboard, caused a great deal of confusion for players and for fans.
Dear Mason County Readers, Mason County News editor Gerry Gamel has informed me that the paper will no longer run my column after the end of October. The decision was made in light of complaints the paper has received which hold that my column has become too political and not outdoors enough.
Members and guests of the Heart of Texas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) enjoyed a presentation by Judge Bill Spiller at their regular monthly meeting on Monday. Spiller told an exciting tale of his ancestor’s attack by Indians in San Saba County. His great great great grandfather and a companion survived after being shot multiple times by arrows.
I hope you are enjoying the milder temperatures of fall as I know I am. It is one of my favorite times of the year when we get to enjoy the colorful changing of the leaves and family gatherings. LANDFILL: Looking at the progress of our new landfill, it is going forward in the capable hands of our engineers from Biggs and Matthews with oversight by our competent City Manager, John Palacio.

I would like to correct some points in Will McCann’s letter to the News last week. Mr. McCann wrote that there is a new precedent/policy of “holding the actual amount of taxes flat each year.” This is incorrect. No one suggested this as a policy. "So, the city did not raise taxes, but the valuations increased due to a good economy.” This is incorrect.
Boss Lion Michael Murphy gaveled the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m. at Nacho’s Café on August 13. The speaker of the day was Eric Youmans, introduced by Boss Lion Michael Murphy. I was looking for a place to move to a few years ago and stopped by Mason. The first few people I met in town and they were all very nice.

7th grade vs. Rogers The 7th grade Punchers had a good hard fought victory against Rogers with a score of 14-6 as the final whistle blew. Defensively, we had a hard time tackling them but in the end we were able to stop them when it counted. Offensively, we were able to move the ball effectively thanks to our linemen up front. Scoring for the seventh grade Punchers were Caleab Carter on 2 rushing touchdowns and a 2 point reception from Cannon Jacoby.
7th grade The seventh grade had a decisive victory against Blanco as they won 20-6 against the Panthers. Our offensive line blocked well giving our backs time to get their holes and giving our quarterback time to throw the ball. Our defense played hard and forced two turnovers in the game, Hunter Bradley and Case Weber each had an interception.

Operation Orphans, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization which is preparing for its 60th year of taking less fortunate kids deer hunting. Due to the recent anthrax outbreak, several ranches which normally host children have had to cancel. We have girls which would like to participate in the October 26th hunt, but may not be able to if we can’t find places for them. Groups come to Camp Gene Ashby the Friday evening before a scheduled hunt.
Fall weather has been so nice. I don’t feel the need to save money and not turn on the heat until we are frozen. We have had cooler weather and a little rain. Best of all, grandson John helped me move all my plants into the greenhouse. This is a chore that gets harder to do each year.
Western Swing Legend Jody Nix will headline the Heart of Texas Fall Ball at the Heart of Texas Events Center in Brady, Texas, on Saturday, October 19. He has spoken twice before at the library, but his time his topic will be “Beekeeping and Tree Cut-outs.” Ethan has been a beekeeper for several years and recently moved a swarm from one of the trees near the library’s Camp Discovery.

Mason-Llano, Texas, October 1, 2019 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Executive Director in Mason and Llano County, Randy Maenius, today announced that ranchers and livestock producers may be eligible for assistance from the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) for grazing losses incurred in 2019. According to Maenius, “Both Mason and Llano County recently met qualifying drought ratings that ‘trigger’ eligibility for the Livestock Forage Pro ...

Puncher Victory Friday Part of Mason's Beauty Last Friday night down in Brackettville, the Punchers turned a difficult situation into a breathtaking victory. With less than one minute of play (and even that was questionable considering how the clock was being run), the Mason team gutted up and Tad Kirby took a pass from Matt Kerr, then raced in for a touchdown that brought the home town fans to their feet! Anyone who left the game early, or who stopped listening after Brackett's last scor ...

Two Rays of Sunshine… Ray Hildebrand, who wrote and sang “Hey, Paula” with college classmate Jill Jackson in 1963, admits to being “older than dirt,” but quickly adds that he’s still “kicking up dust,” despite entering his 80th year a few weeks hence. In fact, he’s “on track” to exceed the longevity of another “Ray”--this one named “Price”--who died at age 87 a half-dozen years ago after 65 years in music. Though the two “Rays” never met, Price sang Hil ...
Here we are late into 2019, and once again, it’s election time for the office of Sheriff of Mason County. I wanted to let you, the citizens of Mason County, know my intentions. I have served as your Sheriff since January 2009 and I am and have been honored to serve you in this capacity.
October. Month of magic. No longer summer. No matter it’s 90 degrees. It’s also cooler nights. And brighter stars. October. The pre-holiday period. A month without pressure. Or plans. A breather. Between summer and holiday madness. Thanksgiving lurks way over yonder. And Christmas is nowhere near the horizon. October is what it is. Trees’ leaves change. And fall. Pumpkins. Haunting wind. Black cats look blacker. Nighttime darker. Stars brighter. ...

Big Boy Most of the time news is bad, or else it wouldn’t be news. Our environment is full of dangerous and destructive forces, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, Kardashians, and congress, so there’s plenty of bad news. But once in a while you run across an item that renews your faith in humanity, and the story of Andrea Athie and the coyote is one of those.

Llano Recycling J. A. Lingle, a former Mason student and graduate of Austin's School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, has recently been employed at Llano Special Opportunity Recycling center. He and several other clients, as well as the staff, are losing their jobs at the end of October, as the Recycling Center is having to close due to the prices dropping so low they cannot re-coup costs to send cardboard for recycling. Mr.
City Taxes Letter to the Editor, I personally want to thank the City Commissioners for listening to me and others and then unanimously voting to keep my city property taxes the same next year as this year. As I told the commissioners at the September meeting, I have lived on a fixed income and in a house that is basically the same as the day I bought it 25 years ago. It seems strange to me though, that any county resident feels they have any right to criticize commissioners who voted ...
When I was in the 4th grade (we still had recess back then) when the bell rang we would race to the closet where they kept the baseball and bat. Whoever got their hands on the bat and ball first got to pick their team and go first at bat.
Mother’s Quick Easy Rolls courtesy: Henrietta Fritz I’m always looking for new ways to make biscuits and rolls, and this recipe sounded interesting so I made up a batch of them. I’m glad I did and I think you’ll be very happy with them as well! Simple, easy, requiring no special ingredients; they’re right in the Practical Baker’s wheelhouse. Ingredients: 1 cup milk ¼ cup shortening ¼ cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon salt 3 cups A/P flour 1 teaspoon salt Process: ...
